Jesse, please refrain from unnecessary restatements. This is a blog, which is to say a repository for personal opinions. It should go without saying that the entire context revolves around those personal opinions.

For the record, I agree that they are religious freaks carrying out wacky rituals.

RE: religious freaks - I was a tad emotional. Let me restate the expression as "people who practice waht I consider to be extremely odd rituals". OK?

I do find it interesting as to how you found this one insignificant aspect of my post worthy of comment.

I would like to thank Jesse,
It is obvious that some people don't see organized religions as a cooperation utilizing incredible tax breaks to forward their close minded beliefs, and furthermore to demand our compliance with their beliefs. I have read the bible, my Irish Catholic upbringing, and the words come a wise man, certainly not from God. I will give a quick example, " From Genesis:1:11 And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so. Well folks we know how photosynthesis works,Plants are made on the third day before there was a sun to drive their photosynthetic processes (1:14-19). Notice, though, that God lets "the earth bring forth" the plants, rather than creating them directly. Maybe Genesis is not so anti-evolution after all. I could go on if you require more information. The book was interesting but no one in their right mind would say that the all knowing God would make such lapses in fact. Does that sound like this administration, lapse in facts.

Hello Jesse! I have appreciated TVNewsLies for a long time, count on it every day to point me toward crucial news stories I'd otherwise miss, and always enjoy your editorial views. Today's contribution on religion and cruelty is another good one -- thanks!

I have some questions about one thing you say, however. Your comment that "[w]e live in a nation that permits religious freaks to use illegal hallucinogenic teas during their whacky rituals..." obviously refers to today's Supreme Court ruling that the US branch of the Brazilian UDV Church has the right to import and drink the sacramental hoasca tea used in their services, just as the UDV Church does, legally, in Brazil.

On what basis do you refer to members of this church as "religious freaks" and their services as "whacky rituals"?

Is it simply because the UDV Church is a religion *at all* that you call its members "freaks" and its rituals "whacky" -- in other words, do you consider all religions to fall into this category? Or are there particular practices of the UDV that cause you to say this? If the latter, what are these features and how did you come to be familiar with the practices of the UDV to the extent that you can make such a judgment?

I myself am not a member of an organized religion. I gather from many of the things you've said that you aren't either. And, like you, I deplore what the Religious Right has done to our country. I would be very cautious, however, about making generalized statements about all members of any group. Intolerance is insidious and dangerous. If we start to say that "all religions are..." or "The UDV is..." or especially using imprecise adjectives like "freaky" and "whacky," we need to be very sure we know what we are communicating and what next steps our words may lead others to.

Please, will you respond and share your experience -- personal or secondhand -- with the UDV that leads you to deal it such a harsh blow in your passing comment?

Thank you very much for your time.

Respectfully --
Susan Jones
