You only just found out about OpenOffice.org? (I know it's a stupid name--"OpenOffice.org"--but that's the actual name of the product, not just its web site.) It has been around in earnest for at least a couple years.

Be careful when editing files in MS format in OpenOffice.org. I've had cases where it would look one way in OOo, and quite different in MS Word. This could be rrrrreally bad if you're creating or updating a resume or something else important, and then send it to someone who will view it in MS Word.

By the way, I have recently tried Debian Linux, and found it very unwieldy. Xandros was a whole different story, though. I'd make the switch, but all this money invested in software is a real hedge against that...

I've pretty much decided that when running WinXP is no longer feasible, I'll switch to Xandros Linux, and NOT Vista. I can't stand Vista, and I'm so bloody sick of hearing about it I just want to scream.
