Religion is a crutch and an escape from reality. It's better and easier to live in that Lalaland than to face the ugliness of daily life. All the more power to those who can so willingly surrender their minds to the make believe so long as they don't try to shove it down my throat.

ROBALB, I respect what you said, but religions are all about dogmatism! If you were to somehow completely extricate dogmatism from any of the major religions, what would remain? If you ignored all the horrible things--misogyny, xenophobia, murder, torture, intimidation, condemnation, and so on--you'd be left with a few good, proper, guiding moral principles.

But those principles can stand on their own. Atheists (for the most part) share those principles.

So why bother with religion at all?
(This is a rhetorical question.)

Saying that you are a member of one of the major religions, but rejecting dogmatism, is like saying you are a scientist who rejects rational thought.

Odd to mention the Jim Jones Massacre. Explore a different version of evens through the Dr. Peter Beter letters regarding this matter.
That most of them were murdered, more than drank some bad Kool-Aid. And a politician got into something he not ought to have.

Looking at the church next door and I see "W 04" "support our troops" American flag decals and other stickers supporting GWB I wonder what they are preaching in that church. Are they preaching to the congregation to support Bush? Support war and the murdering of innocent people?
I first became aware of the danger of lies and deceit by Christian evangelicals, when I first heard of Jim Jones and the Jonestown massacre. Not to long after th that I began seeng another Jim on TV, Jim Baker and his wife Tammy Faye. I knew right away what phonies these clowns were. Then we had Jimmy Swaggart and now Ted Haggard who had weekly conferances with Bush. When are American people going to wake up to the lies and bullshit on corporate TV. We Americans are a brainwashed peiople brainwashed by the churches and schools and the radio and TV news lies. Thank you Jesse for an excellent site and I look to have something to "Think about" daily.

Jesse: You've got it a lot right. Just picture reincarnation..., one of them dudes being brought back as one of them spiders. Carefully remove said item from your domain, and deposit it somewhere it belongs. Having the choice up to you, would you feed it to a lizard, or some such devouring creature? Or set it upon a pretty flower and say good luck, little creature of Creation?
Really, I think we have been made as human beings, and will remain so. A whole lot of misfortune and bad luck awaits these men, in the future. Karma, yin and yang. We have all been given the easy and simple saying "Be Good."
The awakening is coming...

Thanks, Jesse, for a beautifully expressed
explantion of my own beliefs. (And your sister's, LOL. I rescues spiders to) Your editorials resonate with me, very often, but this is the first time i'm compelled to blog a reply. Thank you!

I appreciate the sincerity and simplicity of what you have said, Jesse. I think you have a philosophy of living that seems to work for you, and that's what's really important.

I happen to be a Christian. In fact, I went as far as to get my B.A. in religion and philosophy and my M.Div. several years later. That being said, I would rather listen to your thoughts about people and life than I would most Christians I have met.

A brief comment about why I am a Christian. I very recently read an essay by one of my favorite authors, the late Stephen J. Gould, a professor of Natural History and Evolution at Harvard (I think it was Harvard). He happens to be a Jew, but he loved singing great choral music, much of which has been written by Christians (Bach, Hayden, etc.). Anyway, he described in a very personal way why a scientist like himself would take an interest in religion in any form. One of his conclusions was that religion, when honestly approached, can help frame hope and joy into life (I wish I had the book on me right now, because he says it so much better than I can).

Where I think just about every religion goes wrong is when they start getting dogmatic. Dogmatism divides people up. Love, joy and hope bring them together.

Have a great day, Jesse.
