What the Hell is an ‘Unpopular’ War?

March 23rd, 2008

Note: This article can be read in full at our newly formatted site.

‘Unpopular’ -  un’pop•u•lar -  Lacking general approval or acceptance.

Aw, gee..  The American people really don’t approve of the war. They’ve totally forgotten about the death and destruction in Afghanistan, but they just can’t find it in their hearts to give the war in Iraq a thumbs up.  What a shame.

It’s so comforting to know that we’re in the midst of what the pundits now call an ‘unpopular war.’  I suppose it’s something like an unpopular brand of toothpaste, - not really terrible, but somewhat unappealing and not quite what the public wants.  “It’s not the war, really,” we hear. “It’s the way it was fought.”  It’s not the toothpaste either, I imagine, but something about the after taste.

Is it conceivable that that this illegal, immoral war, built on a mountain of lies and deceptions is merely unpopular?  Is it possible that the death, the bloodshed, and the hundreds of billions of wasted dollars simply lack the general approval of most Americans?

One has to wonder what would happen in a ‘popular war.’

Polls show that most Americans want this long, costly war to be over.  But they also want to win.  They don’t really know what they would win, and from whom they would win anything.  They don’t really know the bad guys from the good ones, but they seem tired of something.  They want the troops home, but they fear being attacked in the night by someone out to get them.

And yet, most Americans are not angry or outraged or horrified by what has happened to this country, to Iraq, to our soldiers, and to the Iraqi people. They have set aside the images of Abu Ghraib, and the rendition of detainees for torture in other countries.  They are not indignant at the lies they were told, nor are they screaming for impeachment of those who told the lies.  They want bygones to be bygones.

They just find the war ‘unpopular’ and inconvenient and unacceptable in some sense….

Celebrating the Anniversary, Mr. Bush?

March 16th, 2008

The following editorial can be read in full at our newly formatted site. Click here.

The war against Iraq began at 5:30 AM Baghdad time (9:30 PM EST, March 19), when the U.S. launched Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Five years, George. Five ugly, deadly, bloody years. This is quite an anniversary. If you wait a day or two, you’ll be able to celebrate the 4,000th US military death as well.
Break out the champagne.

It’s been a fairly quiet five years, George. No photos of the dead or dying. No flag-draped coffins, no talk of the legless, blinded or horribly burned. Not a murmur about hundreds of thousands of dead and terribly injured Iraqis. No concern about the millions who had to flee the country of their fathers… no fanfare about daisy cutters or depleted uranium. Celebrate….we’re making progress.

Great news management, George, -you’d hardly know such carnage was involved. . Good for you.

You’ve waged such a clean, carefree war, George, if just a tad costly. That $12 billion a month you’re spending on this foray really is hardly worth a mention, considering what you’ve done to the dollar. But, a cash cow is a cash cow. Let’s drink to that.

And let’s hear it for the never-ending, euphoric ‘progress,’ in your lovely war, George. Let’s not quibble about the lack of water and electricity for the Iraqis, or the devastating shortages of doctors and medical supplies. And, luckily, a blown up bus or marketplace here or there is hardly newsworthy. Not a word in the establishment media about the daily killings or kidnappings you’ve set in motion all these years.

Hey, the networks deserve a hand here. Almost three quarters of Americans believe that you’ve caused the deaths of only three thousand American troops. Hard to believe, but they’ve inadvertently written off the lives of a thousand young soldiers and marines. Hell, ignorance is bliss. Party on.

Enabling a Madman: George Bush and American Amnesia

March 10th, 2008

Note: Full editorials are now posted on our newly formatted location.

by Reggie, Contributing Editor, TvNewsLIES.org

It just doesn’t stop. With painful consistency, there always is a new effrontery, a new attack on the Constitution, and a new slap in our collective faces. And every day, the American public responds largely in silent quiescence, seemingly unperturbed and indifferent to the insults and abuses being hurled at them from the man who reigns supreme in the White House.

And with this apathy, the people of the United States offer aid and comfort to their greatest enemies from within, and unwittingly give tacit approval to a madman and his boss.

I refuse to give total credit to Bush himself for his actions. The man does not have the intelligence, insight or experience to personally inflict all the damage done by his administration. However, for the sake of simplicity, I will refer to George Bush as the major culprit involved in the crimes against the nation and the world.. In fact, responsibility lies with the entire cadre of neocons and delusional managers who placed a sociopath in the White House and allowed him to play a role he was ill equipped to handle.

Therefore, just consider what George Bush managed to slip past a sleeping public in just the past few days: First, he vetoed legislation that would ban the CIA from using harsh interrogation methods such as water boarding “to break suspected terrorists,” Never mind the Geneva Conventions, never mind US military law, never mind the danger to our own military personnel at the hands of a future enemy. Never mind, because the wimpish Congress will go along without a murmur.

And never mind because the American public, if they know about it at all, will very soon forget.

Then consider that just today the arrogant, self-aggrandizing President of the United States issued another record-breaking signing statement, adding to the more than 750 of his administration. This time Bush declared his right to open mail under emergency conditions, contrary to existing law and contradicting the bill he had just signed.

Hey, people…. That’s about opening YOUR mail….contrary to existing law. But never mind, because the American public, if they know about it at all, will very soon forget.

After all, they’ve forgotten so many other crimes for which this administration is not accountable. Here, at TvNewsLIES.org, we’ve been writing about these crimes for years, as have so many other concerned investigative news sites. In doing so, we have enlarged the proverbial choir and increased the murmur of discontent. But in the long run we have failed.

We have completely failed to stir America to the point of outrage that would have resulted in massive protests in major countries around the world. And that’s because, despite all they learn about the criminal behavior of their government, Americans forget.

And by forgetting, they aid and abet the Bush administration as it destroys the fabric of American life and liberty.

Take a moment to explore a fractional realm of American amnesia as it relates to the past seven year.

Think about some of the crimes that far too few Americans remember:

Hey Raul, Find Those Cuban Oil Reserves!

February 23rd, 2008

Wanna lift nearly five decades of embargo? Wanna make the US your best friend? Wanna take photos of you and Georgie holding hands and smiling like lovers? Get those oil reserves on record, Raul. Time’s a-wasting.

Fidel’s a done deal. He’s old and sick and done for. As Brother Raul, you’re in charge and the barbs are out. Every US presidential candidate will take the Bush lead and aim at your brutal rule, your political prisoners, your embrace of communism, and your refusal to follow our extraordinary example of democracy and freedom.. And, for the record, Florida has a sizable number of electoral votes in play, Raul. Deal with it.

Better still, repent and be loved.

Take a lesson from the Saudis. They’re our best friends, Raul. Never mind that they sentenced a victim of a gang rape to 90 lashes for daring to speak to the press. Never mind that they convicted a woman of witchcraft after a confession obtained by torture. Never mind that they have no religious freedom at all, and never mind that just today the Saudi secret police arrested 37 men for …you guessed it….flirting!!!!

In case you’re wondering, the men are accused of wearing indecent clothes, playing loud music and dancing in order to attract the attention of girls, but remember, Raul, they’ve got the oil. And where there’s oil we can control, human rights are irrelevant. That’s the American way.

African AIDS and Bush Bull….

February 21st, 2008

written by Reggie

Yesterday Tanzania, today Ghana…..six days to create a desperate legacy. What a farce.

The establishment media has hailed Bush’s whirlwind tour as successful promotion of his contribution to combating AIDS in many African nations. This is another case of both media and government deception and distortion. My latest article can be found by using the link to Reggie’s Commentary on the editorial menu at the top of our newly formatted home page:

It begins :

AFRICAN AIDS AND US BULL…..

It is a last legacy lap for George W. Bush, as he traipses through five African nations in six days, touting his great initiatives to combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and poverty in the ravished nations of Africa. One has to wonder what in the world he has to boast about.

For the record, it is important to understand that the 2003 President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) allotted 15 billion dollars to be spent globally over a five year period. to prevent 7 million new infections, treat 2 million people living with AIDS related illnesses, and provide care and support for 10 million persons affected by AIDS.

For the record as well, consider that in Sub-Saharan Africa alone, nearly 23 million people are victims of this pandemic.

And understand that the Bush war machine spends more than that the entire PEPFAR budget every month and a half to sustain its occupation of Iraq….

…But, as usual, the devil is in the details. The largely unreported story is that the Bush HIV/AIDS policy is a devastating failure motivated by right wing religious ideology.

Folks,

I have been working on the new web site. It is under construction but the framework has been completed.

I am in the process of migrating data to the new site. The news section however will be up to date pretty soon.

I have had to upgrade our server software, database software, php software and mailing list software. The mailing list broke…but I’ll get it fixed ASAP.

Please forgive me…I think the new site will be worth the wait.

I’ll post a link to the new site soon…so check back in a day or so.

Thank you,

Will You Believe Me Now? A Vital Flashback…..

February 3rd, 2008

This is a first. We are reposting a blog written here in September of 2006 in which we revealed the background of Philip Zelikow, the Executive Director of the 9/11 Commission. In that blog, we warned that a furtive fox had been put in charge of investigating the hen house, and we joined other 9/11 Truth Seekers in challenging the supposed impartiality of the Commission and its unsubstantiated conclusions.

And, as always, the establishment media ignored it all.

But, lo and behold, today the AP had an epiphany about Philip Zelikow and the White House. In a revealing article about a new book by NY Times reporter Philip Shenon they acknowledged the following:

The Sept. 11 commission’s executive director had closer ties with the White House than publicly disclosed and tried to influence the final report in ways that the staff often perceived as limiting the Bush administration’s responsibility.

For the record, this is not news. Here is the blog we posted in 2006 ! Will you believe us now?

Meet the Official White House 9/11 Myth Maker: Philip D. Zelikow

On September 10th I was one of the guest speakers at a 9/11 truth event at Cooper Union in New York (sponsored by Les Jameson’s ny911truth.org). There were many esteemed speakers that day who shared a great deal of information related to the events of September11th 2001 but no information was more stunning than the little tidbit brought to light about the Executive Director of the famous Kean Commission, Philip D. Zelikow.

Think hard about what you would look for if you were to appoint a director of an investigation into the events of 9/11. Would you look for someone who has studied or even dabbled in the creation and maintenance of public myths? Would you search for or even consider placing someone in charge of that committee whose area of academic expertise is the creation and maintenance of, in his words, “public myths” or “public presumptions”, which he defines as “beliefs thought to be true (although not necessarily known to be true with certainty), and shared in common within the relevant political community.” Well that is exactly what happened!

Do a little research on Philip D. Zelikow, the Executive Director of the Kean Commission and you will find that his area of expertise is precisely suited for people who have a story that is not necessarily known to be true, but want the public to accept it as such. Add that to your 110 story high pile of coincidences that comprise the official story! Think about it!

2007 - Look Back in Anger !!!

December 30th, 2007

Reg, Contributing Editor, TvNewsLIES.org

I just can’t do it this time, folks. I simply cannot wish you all a Happy New Year with a straight face and a hopeful heart. The words no longer make any sense at all, not after seven years of descending every so consistently into Bushco Hell. I no longer believe in the good wishes we traditionally exchange at this time of year and I no longer can summon up the hypocrisy needed to pretend that 2008 will be an iota better for any of us than any of the other years of this murderous regime. .

In fact, I am dead certain it would take a miracle to have anything close to a really Happy New Year. And I do not, I absolutely do not believe in miracles.

I also believe it would take a miracle for many people to understand that my anger and my frustration are based in tragic reality rather than partisan politics. Americans seem to be a people with a very short memory span and a very limited sense of outrage. I don’t know what it will take to shake them into any semblance of collective outrage or united action. I do know however, that I am angrier at the close of this year than at the end of any other year that has passed.

As you might well imagine, I am furious with the usual suspects: the corporate thugs, the PNAC warmongers and the religious fanatics who have wreaked such irreparable havoc on us all. TVNL has raged against what they have done to destroy the lives of so many.. But this time around I am ever more unforgiving in my despair and pessimism because of what has NOT been done by those who could have and should have lived up to the promise of change
.
It was a year of stunning inaction, during which so much that might have been done, and that could have been done, was NOT done, 2007 was heralded as a year of hope and progress. It was not. At year’s end, the crimes of the Bush administration still were business as usual. At year’s end, every outrage against the nation and the world remained uninvestigated and unpunished.

And by the year’s end, members of both parties had joined forces to do nothing at all that might lead to a Happy New Year for anyone..

Just think about it for a minute. Here are some of the issues that could have been dealt with in 2007 and are OFF THE TABLE for any legislative action as I write. Even if every one of them had failed to pass a divided Congress, in the very least, the facts finally would have been placed in the public arena. In the very least, they would not have been swept under the proverbial rug of our shamefully intimidated and cowardly elected legislators.

As 2008 begins, here are SOME of the issues that have endangered our democracy and the lives of so many around the world. For all of 2007, there was no action, nor were there any plans to:

Impeach  George W. Bush and Dick Cheney
• End the illegal and immoral wars against Iraq and Afghanistan
• Challenge the lies about a nuclear buildup in Iran
• Investigate what really happened on 9/11
• Repeal the Patriot Act
• Investigate official misconduct by Alberto Gonzalez
• Investigate the outing of CIA operative Valerie Plame
• Charge those who allowed the torture of Iraqis
• Investigate rendition and torture of detainees
• Close Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo Bay Prisons
• Challenge the abuse of signing statements by George Bush
• Investigate the administration’s spying on Americans before 9/11
• Challenge the constitutionality of the Military Commissions Act
• Challenge directives giving George Bush dictatorial powers
• Demand accountability for billions misspent and ‘lost’ in Iraq
• Demand accountability for billions paid to private contractors
• Expose the influence of PNAC members on US foreign policy
• Challenge the lies to minimize the dangers of global warming
• Restore the constitutional division of church and state
• Protect a woman’s right to privacy
• Restore habeas corpus and the Fourth Amendment

…and on and on and on…

So, where is the sincerity in wishing anyone a Happy New Year, when it is so painfully apparent that it will be a lousy year for so many once again? The economy is tanking, gas prices are going through the roof, tens of millions of Americans are without health insurance, and a half gallon of orange juice is somewhere around four dollars. China owns us, the dollar is worthless, Pakistan is imploding, the massacres in Darfur go on unabated, Israel is building hundreds of new settlements in the West Bank. Tens of thousands of Katrina victims are still suffering, US military deaths in Iraq have topped 3900 and we’ll never get the real numbers of maimed and wounded of our kids or Iraqi or Iraqi civilians.

And George Bush has not yet given up on the idea of bombing Iran.

I know, I know…..look for the silver lining, - after all it’s a new year and there’s always the hope that things will get better. No way.

I honestly wish it were different. I wish the reality of where we are, and what his happening was not fading from the public conscience. I wish that the mainstream media were not controlled by their corporate masters and would report the news with some journalistic integrity. I wish, I wish, but wishing won’t make it so.

I don’t know what will. But make-believe is out this year. I can’t do it.

Please forgive.

They are Not Hiding Torture Evidence, They are Hiding 9/11 Evidence!

December 21st, 2007

Does anyone on Earth really think that members of the Bush administration give a damn in anyone sees how they torture people? Does anyone really think the CIA destruction of evidence has anything to do with that? Are you kidding? Having the world watch Americans torture people would give Dick Cheney an erection that would make Viagra seem like a placebo. These guys are not hiding torture, they are hiding 9/11 evidence, and that is a fact! They are hiding the information that was derived by the torture. They are hiding information pointing away from al Qaeda and the accused accomplices. You can bet you life on that!

Does anyone not realize the coincidence of the recent fire in the VP’s offices while an investigation is taking place is just another in the endless list of perfectly timed miracles that seem to help the Bush administration hide information from the public? The coincidence factor with this administration is historically astonishing. From having a fire in the VP’s office when an investigation is taking place to having a group of people who wrote about the need for a new Pearl Harbor running war games on a day America gets its first new Pearl Harbor in 60 years (9/11/2001), the coincidences, or I should say fortunate yet virtually impossible circumstances that happen to benefit the Cheney administration seem to take place every time one is needed. Now if you believe that these are all just coincidences I have a bridge to sell you. Think about it! Jesse Richard – Editor, TvNewsLIES.org

So When Will Bush Bomb Israel?

December 4th, 2007

I am sitting here watching George W. Bush talk about Iran having a covert nuclear weapons program that they still have not disclosed today. He is telling us that they are dangerous because of this. He emphasized that Iran has tested long range missiles. Well, all of those things apply to Israel too. As a matter of fact Israel supposedly has a stockpile of 200 or so nuclear weapons. When do we bomb them?

Of course I’ll watch my e-mail for unsubscribe messages, because there are many people out there that want to hear the truth, except when it comes to Israel. But let me tell you something my friend, one needs to look no further than Israel when it comes to American foreign policy hypocrisy. From nuclear proliferation to out right deplorable human rights violations, America’s blind and active support for Israel stands as a wonderful example of how our nation talks out of one side of its proverbial mouth! I hope those who take offense to my using Israel as an example take the time to actually pay attention to what goes on in this world when it comes to Israel.

The hypocrisy of this nation has only been surpassed by the hypocrisy of the Bush administration. I really never thought American hypocrisy would surpassed by anything in my lifetime. Oh, was I ever wrong! Think about it! Jesse Richard
