Dennis the Menace is coming... he's a cat 4 hurricane now... and he's headed towards the Gulf... impact in the USA a certainty but where is unknown at this time...

HURRICANE DENNIS ADVISORY NUMBER 16

You do know that this is the first time in recorded history that there have been 4 named tropical storms in the Atlantic Basin before July 6... right? Well... do you know how many hurricanes have hit the USA in July in say... the last one hundred years?

 Three... soon to be four...

Sure hope y'all have your emergency kits in order... food & water for you and your pets, gas the car, get some cash, prescription drugs, spare glasses, medical kit, beer and wine for barter (ok I just made that one up...), kitty litter, go over your evacuation plans and ... if you haven't done so yet, you might want to make sure your insurance is in order... and should you have time.... video your belongings...

I voted YES...I'd get the hell out of Florida, or anywhere along the Gulf Coast.

The path of Dennis is set currently to come right over us on Tuesday morning. Hopefully, by then he will have run out of steam and not amount to much more than a rain shower.

Thanks for all the updates, Stripey... :)

considering that Tropical Storm Cindy (when she came ashore that is) is pounding the hell out of the northeast right now, I don't think Dennis will fizzle out anytime soon... And don't forget... more deaths happen inland with tropical systems than on the coast where they make landfall and it's because of all the rain they dump...

floods...

Be ready don't be sorry...

and Good Luck!

rained up here in new york state today....man did it ever...and we got the light end of it....but it caused some minor flooding (not for me) and the lightning was fantastic...of course it did kill the power for about 5 minutes.

nothing better than a good lightning storm...i wish it had passed by during the night.

I also like a display of nature at her summery best..thunder and lightning, some rain, a bit of wind. Like Eddie Rabbit said, I love a rainy night. :D

But, the Cindy and Dennis show I could do without, especially this early in this very active hurricane season.

OK... I made a small error... that question should read how many MAJOR hurricanes have hit the US in July during the last 100 years... THAT answer is three... but they did say that Dennis was the earliest forming Cat 4 hurricane... EVER...

Dennis is back up to a cat 4 again.

AND, two more possible storms forming.

Catherine, you are going to be all pruny before the summer ends.

I was in my den yesterday, which has a cathedral ceiling, so I don't pay much attention to the nether regions that loom up there in the dark. However, the sun was shining yesterday, for once, and I noticed a spot on the ceiling near the center beam. Closer inspection revealed its a leak spot.

We were taking advantage of the pretty weather and were in the midst of installing a sliding glass door in our daughter's old bedroom, and did not want to stop to climb up onto the roof. So this morning we have to go up there and try to find what has caused that leak before any further damage can be done from the rains we're expecting tomorrow. I know we had a couple of shingles blown off recently, because I found them when I was mowing. Also, because the ceiling in the den is white, I'll have to get up there at some point and try to make that leak stain disappear.

Ah, the joys of home ownership...never-ending maintenance. :D

a friend of mine had ceilings like that and he thought it was leaking. when i looked at it, i found the "leak" was actually condensation built up behind the ceiling due to lack of proper ventilation. the wood sheating was literally rotted under the roof!! he didn't want to go thru the expense of a new roof, so i cut the ridge open and installed a ridge vent and we cut several vents into the soffits.....stopped his "leak".

he sold the house a couple years later....lol

not saying that's your problem...just sharing a story.

Dennis' winds have diminished... currently "only" 135 mph and seems to be making a beeline for Pensacola where they have yet to clean up all the debris from Ivan...

Yikes!

Catherine? Once you have fixed the leak... and checked for mold... Use shellac to hide that water stain...
