it's WAY better than the news channels

I agree! AND the meteorologists are handsome, beautiful, and PROFESSIONAL!

I think one of the funniest things I ever saw was the way Bill Cosby saluted the Weather Channel on its 20th anniversary. At that time, John Holt was the Miami Hurricane Center Director, and a fairly old guy, but still doing an excellent job in that role. Many of the female meteorologists working at the Weather Channel had been pregnant about the same time as this salute. Cosby gave his congratulations to the WC, and then looked around as though he wanted to make sure no one was listening.

He put his face up very close to the camera and whispered, "I'm wondering about all of these ladies suddenly showing up pregnant here at the Weather Channel. I think it's all John Holt's fault!"

We got rocked around here yesterday with tornadoes, which is very rare. We live in the Miami Valley. We had somewhere around 15 spotted funnel clouds and a reported 5 touchdowns. GEEEEZZZZ. We get maybe one every 5 years or so.

Carlotta, on the other paw, is still a hurricane, but as you can see in the above loop, she seems to be falling apart as well...

Tropical storm forms off N. Carolina

© 2006 The Associated Press

MIAMI — Tropical Storm Beryl, the second named storm of 2006 Atlantic hurricane season, formed off the North Carolina coast Tuesday and a tropical storm watch was issued for the eastern part of the state.

At about 5 p.m. EDT, a hurricane reconnaissance aircraft reported that the storm's maximum sustained winds were at least 40 mph, the National Hurricane Center said. The storm was centered about 180 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras and was moving toward the north at about 6 mph.

Beryl Weakening Already?
July 19, 2006 - 01:05 AM UTC

Beryl is getting perilously close to tropical depression status this evening. I doubt that NHC would actually drop it to a TD the very next advisory after upgrading it for consistency's sake. That said, all signs point to Beryl weakening.
Thunderstorm activity has diminished greatly since 5pm. The U. of Wisconsin Dvorak intensity estimate has also been falling thoughout the evening. We are at the normal daily minimum for thunderstorm activity over the ocean, so perhaps this is the reason for the weakening. The hurricane hunters revisited the stronger southeast quadrant this evening and have found slightly slower wind speeds, although only by a few knots. Below, I have posted the two most recent infrared images and the most recent visible and water vapor satellite images, along with a superimposed tropical storm symbol for ease of recognizing the center of circulation. Notice on the two infrared images how thunderstorm activity has decreaed in size and intensity. On the visible (third) image, the center of circulation has become exposed. That would normally be a sign of shear affecting the system, but that isn't the case for this storm. It appears to me, the reason for the dwindling convection and exposed center would be dry air, which is apparent in the darkness on the west side of the storm on the water vapor (bottom) image. This dry air intrusion was mentioned by NHC in the last discussion. It appears this will be the limiting factor for further development........

Ya know... Jim Cantore said last night that 97% of hurricanes in the past have occurred later than July 17...

Keep plugging...

Today on Dem.Now They reported what is happening during the Typhoon season in Asia. We can't forget that this is happening everywhere in the world as the climate gets more severe and sets records everywhere.

Quote:
At Least 104 Dead in China Typhoon
China has declared a state of emergency amid its most powerful typhoon in fifty years. More than 1.5 million people have been evacuated from southeast areas. At least 104 people have been killed and more than 80 injured. An estimated 200 people are missing and feared dead. Thousands of homes have been destroyed and scores of ships capsized. It’s the eighth typhoon to hit China already this year. The death toll for the year has now passed 1700. More than 600 died in typhoons just last month.

Their eighth typhoon- 1.5 million evacuated -600 dead last month- the most powerful in 50 years! If we had these headlines what would we do? Sit and watch Like Bush and Brownie? Leave the people to its mercy in a super duper dome? No, Not in America!

Yes, climate change is world wide. Unfortunately, if it doesn't happen in America it doesn't happen, for many folk here.

China has been getting the Katrinas we got last year.

Do people in America know it?
