Winds knock out power in Northeast
October 28, 2006

NEW YORK (AP) -- Strong winds and heavy rains toppled trees and brought down power lines from Maine to Maryland on Saturday, sending utility crews scrambling to restore power to thousands.

Wind gusts exceeding 50 mph knocked out power Saturday to nearly a quarter-million people in the New York City area.

The worst problems were on Long Island, where 78,683 customers -- about 228,000 people -- were without power at noon. Crews restored electricity to many of those, but winds knocked down more wires later in the afternoon.

About 7,500 customers still lacked power on Long Island on Saturday evening.

Gusts up to 70 mph were recorded in Maine, and nearly 48,000 people were without power Saturday evening.

They weren't the only ones! My power went off yesterday for about five hours. :x The winds from the night before had damaged a power pole/wires and had to be replaced. I'm not sure exactly what they did, but I believe they had to replace the entire pole and put new wires on. ...I was not happy to be without power.

Yes, they howled here for about 12 hours. More branches down. I am going to be lucky if I have any trees left!

No global climate change, eh?

At least you've got your neighbors to help you clean them up.

i wonder when they'll start putting wires underground where they belong?

telephone poles and ugly wires above are a product of the 1800's....you would think by now they'd embark on a major campaign to bury all wires.

Most companies around here have been burrying lines for a long time, but there still are overhead. I have to say burried lines sure look nicer too!

I have been hearing this quite a bit now since the storm. A big job, but so is having companies coming in from all over the nation every time we have bad weather.

Btw, my neighbors don't help. Part of my not 'belonging' here... Darn good thing I come from strong Scottish stock.

That was a joke dori. You mentioned on another thread how "nice" all your neighbors were.
Just wanted to poke you with a stick.
