Thousands of residents of emergency trailers along the Gulf of Mississippi were urged Friday to seek more secure shelter as a tropical depression following the same path as Hurricane Katrina threatened damaging winds, rain and floods this weekend.

The depression, the 10th of the hurricane season, was expected to strengthen into Tropical Storm Jerry in the evening, the National Weather Service said.

It was projected to make landfall near Gulf Shores, Ala., about 1 a.m. ET.
