Petition Supporting Impeachment of Bush and Cheney
http://www.afterdowningstreet.org/petition

Submitted by davidswanson on Wed, 2006-11-01 17:04. Activism | Impeachment
Sign our Ten Reasons to Impeach Bush and Cheney Petition online.
Then print this PDF, make copies, and collect signatures from friends and neighbors.
One good place to collect names is right in front of your Representative's office, if there is passing foot traffic. You should do so prominently with a visible sign so your Representative (and staff) can't miss it. Other good locations are busy malls, libraries, and post offices. Be creative! You can also go door-to-door in your neighborhood and bring your petition to work or church.
Collect and submit names anytime, but especially on Impeachment Weekend, December 16-17, 2006.
If you'd prefer to collect petitions with a group, join (or help us organize) a local Impeachment Committee:
http://www.democrats.com/cdic
Instructions for submitting collected names:
Go to http://democrats.com/impeach-petition
look just below the message and click the "send to friend" link
the "send to friend" page lets you keypunch up to 20 email addresses, one per line
copy/paste this list of email addresses and save it on your computer for local organizing efforts in the future
press "submit"
This will send an email to everyone on your list asking them to sign our Ten Reasons to Impeach Bush and Cheney Petition online, which will go directly to their Representative - and get an individual response.
Then send the original petitions to your representative.

Full text of the Petition
I support the impeachment of President Bush and Vice President Cheney for the following reasons:
1. Violating the United Nations Charter by launching an illegal "War of Aggression" against Iraq without cause, using fraud to sell the war to Congress and the public, and misusing government funds to begin bombing without Congressional authorization.
2. Violating U.S. and international law by authorizing the torture of thousands of captives, resulting in dozens of deaths, and keeping prisoners hidden from the International Committee of the Red Cross.
3. Violating the Constituton by arbitrarily detaining Americans, legal residents, and non-Americans, without due process, without charge, and without access to counsel.
4. Violating the Geneva Conventions by targeting civilians, journalists, hospitals, and ambulances, and using illegal weapons, including white phosphorous, depleted uranium, and a new type of napalm.
5. Violating U.S. law and the Constitution through widespread wiretapping of the phone calls and emails of Americans without a warrant.
6. Violating the Constitution by using "signing statements" to defy hundreds of laws passed by Congress.
7. Violating U.S. and state law by obstructing honest elections in 2000, 2002, 2004, and 2006.
8. Violating U.S. law by using paid propaganda and disinformation, selectively and misleadingly leaking classified information, and exposing the identity of a covert CIA operative working on sensitive WMD proliferation for political retribution.
9. Subverting the Constitution and abusing Presidential power by asserting a "Unitary Executive Theory" giving unlimited powers to the President, by obstructing efforts by Congress and the Courts to review and restrict Presidential actions, and by promoting and signing legislation negating the Bill of Rights and the Writ of Habeas Corpus.
10. Gross negligence in failing to assist New Orleans residents after Hurricane Katrina, in ignoring urgent warnings of an Al Qaeda attack prior to Sept. 11, 2001, and in increasing air pollution causing global warming.
Sign the petition online.

Collecting Names on the Street
The 5 second pitch on the street is: "Sign our petition to impeach Bush and Cheney!"
If they agree, you hand them the clipboard and they sign, and while they are signing you can say:
"We will deliver this petition to our Congressman, Joe Blow. You can have even more impact if you send an email to him directly, so if you don't mind we will email you with the link to our online letter. Thank you so much for your support!"

1.) When we ratified the UN Charter we agreed to abide by it, but it does not and should not have the force of law within the United States. As a sovereign nation we are not beholden to foreign laws. However in the process of seeking authorization to go to war from Congress he lied to both Congress and the American people and that in and of itself is inexcusable. Our leaders must be accountable before the people and the other branches and that requires they speak the truth. For that alone Impeachment would be justified.
Quote:
2. Violating U.S. and international law by authorizing the torture of thousands of captives, resulting in dozens of deaths, and keeping prisoners hidden from the International Committee of the Red Cross.

2.) Our treatment of Prisoners of War has broken numerous U.S federal laws and violated international agreements to which we are a party and for no legitimate reason. These reciprocal agreements are what keep nations all over the world to a reasonably decent standard of keeping prisoners. Worse we have even refused to name who our prisoners are, even during the Civil War we released the names of our prisoners. A disgusting display of dishonorable behavior and one that the commander-in-chief must take responsibility for and be punished in turn.
Quote:
3. Violating the Constituton by arbitrarily detaining Americans, legal residents, and non-Americans, without due process, without charge, and without access to counsel.

3.) Hasn't this clown learned anything? The denial of habeus corpus was one of the grounds stated in our own Declaration of Independence. This is perhaps his most heinous act and one that should see him impeached, tried, and stod up before a firing squad.
Quote:
4. Violating the Geneva Conventions by targeting civilians, journalists, hospitals, and ambulances, and using illegal weapons, including white phosphorous, depleted uranium, and a new type of napalm.

4.) The Geneva Conventions are hugely important in keeping wars above the sort of atrocities that were common only three or four hundred years ago. But this clause has serious problems. Deliberate targeting of civilians is prohibited but if civillians are in proximity to a military target and are killed or wounded as a result of stray fire or proximity effects this is not against the Conventions. So such as when the famous hotel was fired on it is not a violation as the commander on the ground reported taking fire from that location thus civillian casualties were tragic but simply a case of what happens when you are too close to a war. Second napalm, white phosphorous, and depleted uranium are not illegal under the terms of the Geneva Conventions. They are nasty weapons with horrible effects but in no way illegal.
Quote:
5. Violating U.S. law and the Constitution through widespread wiretapping of the phone calls and emails of Americans without a warrant.

5.) This is not merely a violation of federal law which would be a felony if any private citizen engaged in it, it is a violation of the Constitution itself. It certainly stands under the high crimes and misdemeanors clause and could serve as the sole necessary reason to impeach all by itself.
Quote:
6. Violating the Constitution by using "signing statements" to defy hundreds of laws passed by Congress.

6.) If this weren't so disgusting it would be funny. The "signing statement" is merely a statement of how the president understands the law, it has no legal force whatsoever other than the fact no one has called him on it. He hasn't violated the constitution so much as terribly misinterpreted it and his misinterpretation carries no legal weight whatsoever, regardless of what any signing statement says they can not change the law he just signed. So he's just been breaking these laws and pointing to a powerless constitutional curiousity to justify it.
Quote:
7. Violating U.S. and state law by obstructing honest elections in 2000, 2002, 2004, and 2006.

7.) I don't doubt this, I'm rather certain that he did tamper with elections. But there's no proof that he himself was involved and his party is far more likely a target for the responsibility for this one considering he's borderline retarded.
Quote:
8. Violating U.S. law by using paid propaganda and disinformation, selectively and misleadingly leaking classified information, and exposing the identity of a covert CIA operative working on sensitive WMD proliferation for political retribution.

8.) No question here, he's responsible for all of these acts and any one of them would be grounds to justify impeachment and potentially criminal indictment afterwards.
Quote:

9.) Yet another act of historic stupidity by our retarded president. We've fought WARS over exactly these issues. Our nation was formed as a result of a revolution against the last government who did this to us. Guess it was too much to ask that he actually learn history in school.
Quote:
10. Gross negligence in failing to assist New Orleans residents after Hurricane Katrina, in ignoring urgent warnings of an Al Qaeda attack prior to Sept. 11, 2001, and in increasing air pollution causing global warming.

10.) Ignoring the warnings from his intelligence agencies prior to the Sept 11 attacks was a warning sign of the complete incompetence of our retarded president, and justification for a lack of confidence but isn't grounds for impeachment and really shouldn't be. The size of the government makes it impossible to act and react in a timely manner, if anything Sept 11 was a signal that the entire government should be streamlined rather than sticking it entirely to one person, though as the President he is responsible for every act of every member and portion of the government he runs. Katrina was a disaster response nightmare, and as president he is responsible for it because it was his DUTY to see that those under his command were capable and provided with the resources needed to do their jobs. His dereliction of duty would be grounds for many responses and impeachment is one of them. Global warming is a problem that needs to be dealt with, but it isn't grounds for impeachment.
