Fear of Russia elected Eisenhower.

Kennedy used fear of the nuke to get elected.

Nixon was elected due to his tough war stance.

Carter because we felt he could handle the nuclear threat.

Reagan because of his tough war stance.

Bush got re-elected because of his stance on terrorism.

It takes forever to read "House of War" by James Carrol. Page after page unwittingly tells how doves have almost always been marginalized or fired while the most paranoid of the super hawks almost always seem to get promoted. The intersting thing is that the author never meant to give this message. It is simply written between the lines. Over and over and over.

If I may adjust slightly:

Fear of Russia {and communism} elected Eisenhower.

Kennedy used fear of the nuke to get elected. {false missile gap}

{Johnson was elected over fears Goldwater was madman.}

Nixon was elected due to his tough war stance. {and fear of Hippies rioting in the streets}

Carter because we felt he could handle the nuclear threat. {and fear another crook in office}

Reagan because of his tough war stance. {Same as Eisenhower—fear USSR and communism}

{Bush I got elected as extension of Reagan}

{Clinton got elected because of fears over economy}

Bush got re-elected because of his stance on terrorism. {Stole both elections}

Congrats on your knowledge of the false missile gap that the Pentagon brass was constantly parading in the 50's. Russia actually had four ICBM's during much of the era that Americans were being scared into building bomb shelters and hiding under their desks.

I speak of fear more than I perhaps ought to. Unfortunately my fear stems from.....us. I fear my own government more than anything.

While expressing concerns over the possibility of WWIII, I am 90% certain that it would our actions that would precipitate it.
