3/4's is a lot. What a way to hunt for bombs. Using live humans as guinea pigs. It is obvious that stealth is their only way to attack, as like minutemen they seize whatever method they can to instill fear in their enemy. It keeps one on edge constantly, and shatters the nerves. As you said, at any moment.
The British in 1776 felt the same way and wished for the enemy to engage them in conventional form. This tactic of guerilla conflict in Iraq, is because they could never win a war where Americans could call in planes to settle the battle. As in Vietnam, where teams of Americans were sent out to engage and find the enemy and then, call in an airstrike to settle the score. Heavy handed and effective, it forces the enemy to be resourceful and dirty. But all's fair in war and when the rules of engagement are preset, then you must improvise, strike quick and retreat, to engage another day. The object is to kill or injure young men, preferrably white, to dishearten the troops on the ground and those waitng for sonny to return, at home. Seems to be working.
Perhaps progress is not intended, but rather keep things at a distance, you know, suicide bombers, mortar attacks etc. There is no real attempt to drive Americans out of Iraq, just to remind them they are not welcome. They can never organise enough to rise up and take the offensive, but it appears as if they are unwilling to settle it on either side. Just keep it a moral victory for each side and continue the occupation.
As always, it is the young men on both sides who sacrifice their lives for the greater good, whatever that is. If we could probe our leaders minds we would all be wiser to their intent. Until we can, it is the great mystery- Why?
