open your mail?

I ask because my son got a small package from his dad today and the tape they put on had clearly been cut and the other sides of the package were resealed with this tape that says "Resealed by the Post Office". WTF?

hmmm...the package probably just got unsealed somehow during shipping, and they resealed it for safety. ...but then I ask myself, how did it get opened in the first place?..bad taping to begin with? someone snooping?... I dunno. I would hope that it would simply be bad taping and the post office trying to reseal the package for you. I would hope. I don't know, legally though, if it's illegal for them to open packages. It better be!

Well, lefty, the first thing I'd do on Monday morning is call the post office and ask. Don't destroy the box or the tape, either, as you might need it in case they claim "no knowledge."

I would guess anything the government does now is considered legal.

Is the post office still a government agency? When I looked it up in the phone book, it gave a url of usps.com, not usps.gov.

Just wondering.

Funny story about the government and how fucked up it is...(sorry to hijack your thread Lefty)... The last apartment I lived in with my boyfriend was in a city where the electric company is run by the gov. We moved in and had two uneventful months.
Then, our power went off.
The bill was paid.
Hmmm..
We called the electric company to see what was going on and they told us that the last person who lived in that apartment had a past due bill of $600. We showed them proof that we lived there now, that our bill was paid, and even had our apartment manager conact them. For 40 hours strait their only response was "We can't turn your electricy back on until this person pays their bill. Sorry." ... (Management told us, and the electric company, that this person had been behind on rent for two months, and when they went into their apartment it was vacated. They had just split.)
We eventually called the 24 hour service, where we're immediately connected to a technician, and paid him $100 bucks to come out and brake the lock off and turn the electricity back on. He did....And there wasn't a problem after that.

Is that legal?

Good grief. You can't have electricity because the people who rented the place BEFORE you didn't pay their bill?

Another fine piece of logic...

The electric company wouldn't even let the apartment complex pay the bill! They offered to because of the fucked up situation, and the electric company said no. ...ok...?

Why does anyone need fiction when reality is so preposterous?

Funny site my boyfriend showed me:

http://www.directcreative.com/aaexperiments.html

Quote:
Having long been genuine admirers of the United States Postal Service (USPS), which gives amazingly reliable service especially compared with many other countries, our team of investigators decided to test the delivery limits of this immense system. We knew that an item, say, a saucepan, normally would be in a package because of USPS concerns of entanglement in their automated machinery. But what if the item were not wrapped? How patient are postal employees? How honest? How sentimental? In short, how eccentric a behavior on the part of the sender would still result in successful mail delivery?
Testing the Limits

We sent a variety of unpackaged items to U.S. destinations, appropriately stamped for weight and size, as well as a few items packaged as noted. We sent items that loosely fit into the following general categories: valuable, sentimental, unwieldy, pointless, potentially suspicious, and disgusting. We discovered that although some items were never delivered, most of the objects of even highly unusual form did get delivered, as long as the items had a definitely ample value of stamps attached. The Postal Service appears to be amazingly tolerant of the foibles of its public and seems occasionally willing to relax specific postal regulations.
...
$1 bill. Sealed in clear plastic, with label attached with address and postage. Days to delivery, 6.

Rose. Postage and address were attached to a card that was tied to the stem. Delivery at doorstep, 3 days, beat up but the rose bud was still attached.

Never-opened small bottle of spring water. We observed the street corner box surreptitiously the following day upon mail collection. After puzzling briefly over this item, the postal carrier removed the mailing label and drank the contents of the bottle over the course of a few blocks as he worked his route.

Funny shit.
