There's this Mercedes commercial that's been playing on radio stations in the SF Bay Area and there's this one line that just bugs me:

A lady talks about she and her mate riding in their Mercedes and she notices people looking in, and she just feels all squishy inside (well, something like that).

And I'm thinking, "Do people really think like that when they drive around in their fancy cars?"

It's just a bucket of metal, plastic, etc., people. Yet, you can see where people treat their flashy vehicles like vanity extensions.

I saw my district rep's wife driving around in her Lexus earlier today. He and she are Republicans. They have two daughters. Neither of them is in the military.

Those are all just status cars, helping the people who drive them feel that they are some kind of American royalty. True, I think they have some added safety features that the cars we peasants drive don't have. People like this would demand that they get access to the lifeboats first, I'm sure.

I call people like that Hyacinth Buckets, after the Brit Com character in the show Keeping Up Appearances. Hyacinth wants everybody to think she's a member of the aristocracy.
