This is a transcript of Joe Vecchio's daily "Cup O' Joe Report" podcast, availaible via "screaming audio" here and posted with the permission of the author.

So this right-wing troll on a message board was trying to downplay Bush's illegal wiretapping by saying he found it funny that we're criticizing Bush for adhering to an idea that's one of the core beliefs of democrats and liberal minded governments around the world. The idea that the rights of society outweigh the rights of the individual.

This is, of course, crapola. Yes, liberals believe in the idea of a greater community, of being part of something larger than yourself, and of everyone's shared responsibility as citizens. And there are occasions when the greater needs of society are more important than individual needs. But this isn't one of those cases. No liberal I ever met has ever believed in allowing the government to do and get away with acts that are clearly illegal. What Mr. Bush and his administration are doing are, to my mind at least, clearly against both individual liberty and the liberty of society overall. It's an issue that ought to be bipartisan, but in this day and age any issue can be turned into a partisan one.

Now I'm not a psychiatrist, so I'm not sure what reason this troll had for instigating trouble, I'm not even going to pretend to understand why they continue to support an administration that is among the most, if not the most corrupt and incompetent administrations we've ever had. Maybe they don't see that what these people are doing is a threat to their liberties as well as mine. But it seemed pretty clear to me that, for this guy anyway, having a Republican President was more important than having an American one.

You hit the nail on the head Joe. Republicans have put their party above our country. They want to replace the Presidency with a Monarchy, and to replace the Constitution with the platform of the Republican National Committee.

...and they're too stupid to realize that the Constitution belongs to AMERICANS, Repubs and Dems alike. When it goes, we will all suffer, unless they're billionaire Repubs who have allowed their souls to be bought and sold. And then it doesn't really matter, does it?

No amount of money can compensate for losing something so vital. I don't like being poor, and I certainly wish I had more money than I have now (or at least a decent job), but I can't see what difference it makes if you have one million or two million.

If you can live your life and do something you love and support yourself as well, then you'll have as good a life as you can possibly imagine. And I for one would be perfectly happy to let the rich and powerful play their little games, so long as they would leave those of us whose ambitions aren't so grand the hell alone.

But we're their only source of amusement. Our struggles are what amuse them and prevent them from becoming complacent and bored. We are the dirty deed doers they require to get what they need.

Slaves are the massahs oppressed targets. No work involved, just flash some green or a whip and it is yours. Great fun watching them squirm.

The people with money and connections (the first class, that is) are always the ones who "escape" when the going gets rough or they no longer want to be involved with something so mundane (to them) as a nation's survival. Yes, one has to understand that the danger exists and subsequently use one's resources to act on that knowledge. However, recognition of danger and being able to actually protect oneself from that danger is directly connected to one's resources, whether it be jewels, cash, family connections, or weapons and the ammo to keep those weapons functioning.

Bribery still works beautifully...look at lobbyists.

Who had bunkers to go to during the 9/11 'attacks?' Which class of people are more likely to be saved from a disaster at sea? Remember the Titanic? Which class of people would be more likely to get off the burning plane first...those in the tail section or those in first class? Remember how the members of the OBL family who were in the US on 9/11 were quickly flown out of the country?
