Michael Kwiatkowski writes a powerful editorial on how those we sent to Congress in 2006 to do something about issues like this one are failing us as badly as the previous Republican-led Congress did. What are we to do?

Can someone explain to me why we still have a Democrat-led Congress, if all it's going to do is acquiesce to George W. Bush? That's what the GOP-led Congress did for six years, and look where it's gotten this country. Nancy Pelosi wasn't even sworn in yet as the Speaker of the House when she publicly removed impeachment as an option for dealing with a criminal executive. After six months, Democrats caved in to the shrub's demands and gave him enough money to fund his war in Iraq until his term (allegedly) expires. Now they've given in to his demand to be allowed to spy on Americans with impunity.

Sixteen Democrats in the Senate decided that it was perfectly fine to let Bush wiretap American citizens without warrants. Who were those Democrats? Evan Bayh (Indiana); Tom Carper (Delaware); Bob Casey (Pennsylvania); Kent Conrad (North Dakota); Dianne Feinstein (California); Daniel Inouye (Hawai‘i); Amy Klobuchar (Minnesota); Nancy Mary Landrieu (Louisiana); Blanche Lincoln (Arkansas); Claire McCaskill (Missouri); Barbara Mikulski (Maryland); Bill Nelson (Florida); Ben Nelson (Nebraska); Mark Pryor (Arkansas); Ken Salazar (Colorado); Jim Webb (Virginia).

Joe LIEberman voted with his fellow Republicans to let the shrub eavesdrop on our telephone conversations, which is no surprise; he's fully supportive of this gutting of the Constitution, and we've learned that this is all he can be counted on to do -- it's in his nature to rubber stamp evil. But let's look at some of the Democrats who voted for it, too. Jim Webb, who ran last year as a self-proclaimed opponent of the Iraq war. Bob Casey, who unseated incumbent slimeball Rick Santorum (a creature so vile, he had a certain kind of bodily discharge named after him). Why did people elect these guys if all they were going to do was do the exact same thing their Republican predecessors did: give in to the shrub?

My friends, we have been well and truly snookered. The Democrats who ran on platforms against the Iraq war and against the abuses of the law and the Constitution by George W. Bush and Dick Cheney lied to us. They got into office and then used the power we gave them to do the bidding of a dictatorial regime that half the country wants out of office NOW -- not in January 2009, but fucking NOW. Even Sherrod Brown, a man I supported and voted for last year, surrendered to the shrub on funding the Iraq war.

Is this what we traded in the GOP rubber stamp Congress for, a rubber stamp Democrat Congress? Meet the new boss: same as the old boss, except that instead of anally raping you with broken glass he's doing it with an unlubricated broomstick. Gee, thanks guys. Nice to know that when push comes to shove, you get down on your knees and bow down to the dictator. We voters will remember all this the next time you fuckers are up for re-election.

Post subject:  You don't understand.

The Democrats were doing the same thing under Clinton throughout the 1990s. You don't think the NSA just started sucking up everyone's data after Bush stole the white house?

I was complaining about Echelon, Carnivore, and the rise of techno-fascism before anyone ever heard of GW Bush.

This false Democrat v Republican mantra is truly disheartening. This isn't anything new or even different than what has been standard practice your entire lifetime.

They make Bush the big boogeyman. And he is a real cutting edge asshole. But the gameplan has never wavered that much since World War 2.

They do not represent us.

Get a clue.
