When I see huge defense contractors advertising on consumer broadcast television, my disdain for corporate dominance and the media intensifies.
Today's example is the Boeing commercial that's been occupying the Meet the Press sponsor breaks in a big way. Boeing's neighborly theme within the spot is: "We know why we're here...."
The advertisement features individuals presented as Boeing employees who utter remarks about reshaping aerospace and contributing to a stronger national defense system. Toward the end of their we do it because we care line of crap, one of these 'actors' engages his best sincerity and asserts "that's why we're here."
Well, Boeing, my take is a bit different from that presented within your advertisement. I'm convinced that the reason you are "there" (i.e., at the top of NBC's sponsor list for Meet the Press -- where you most certainly don't belong) is to exercise your gargantuan buying power in order to command the program's content. My guess is that you've secured some tremendous influence with NBC concerning what's presented within/omitted from Meet the Press and other shows. So come on, Boeing... that's really why you're there. We know it!
It's a shame that more people don't question the behaviors of corporate behemoths like Boeing. I mean there aren't many viewers who are likely to purchase aircraft from Boeing simply because they've seen one of these "promotional" spots on NBC. In fact, my bet is there's none. Why the hell does a company like Boeing need any advertising time on the consumer broadcast spectrum anyway? It's obvious: so they can help craft the propaganda that will ultimately make their wallets thicker.
