Much of the time, I find people to be in a dissociative state where they're just "doing their job", and it's those "other people" who are to blame. People want their "piece of the pie", no matter how rotten it is, thus, a sort of "counter-ethos" develops in parallel with the "counter-reality".
The type of intact conscience you're describing has been systematically denigrated as "naiive idealism", which the drones of the corporatocracy have been trained to attack unmercifully. "Yes, in an ideal world 2 +2 = 4, but that's just not
realistic."
