UPDATE: AP Finally Quits Calling Iraqi Rape/Murder Victim, Age 14, A 'Woman'

NEW YORK More than two days after the victim of an alleged rape in Iraq -- she was later killed along with with three members of her family -- was identified as a 14-year-old girl, the Associated Press and some other news organizations continued to identify her as a woman.

In a widely-published AP dispatch today from Balad, Iraq, Robert Burns reported, in discussing alleged atrocities by U.S. troops, "Among the most recent cases is the alleged rape and slaying of a young Iraqi woman and the killing of her family members in Mahmoudiyah." At least one other AP story today used similar wording.

This mirrored the language used in several AP articles on Tuesday by Robert Reid and Juan Lozano.

Finally, later on Wednesday, the AP switched over to "girl."

Many other newspapers or news services -- such as CNN, the BBC and -- have also used "woman" while The New York Times has switched to "girl" and others, including the Los Angeles Times, and McClatchy, Scripps and Reuters stories, have used "teen" or simply given the actual age of the dead girl, Abeer Qasim Hamza al-Janabi.

The Washington Post's Joshua Partlow, writing from Iraq about the case on Tuesday, also used "women" but after an E&P article on this issue appeared early yesterday, the same reporter today switched to "girl."

One Houston Chronicle story today used "woman" while another chose "girl."

Five American soldiers and one ex-soldier have now been charged in the case and local newspapers are covering the arrests closely. The Patriot-News of Harrisburg, Pa., reports today that Pfc. Jesse Spielman is accused of killing "an Iraqi teen" while The Chambersburg (Pa.) Public Opinion report calls the victim “an Iraqi young woman”.

The Lawrence Journal-World, meanwhile, published a letter from a reader today which read: "I really can’t decide what is more disheartening about the news story regarding the 'young Iraqi woman' who was allegedly raped and killed by U.S. soldiers: the fact that there are armed Americans running around Iraq who evidently don’t view Arab females as human, or the fact that the news media tries to mitigate the magnitude of their alleged crime by referring to the victim as a 'woman.'

"Let’s keep the facts straight here, and let’s not soften the horror by aging the victim semantically. She was a 14-year-old girl."

Finally, in an AP dispatch distributed late Wednesday, the wire service appeared to finally accept the "girl" description, with this explanation: "A photograph of the girl's Iraqi identity card, viewed by The Associated Press in Baghdad, showed the girl was 14, with her birthdate listed as Aug. 19, 1991. The identity card was issued in 1993 and shows a picture of the girl as a toddler. " This information had been reported by other news organizations more than 48 hours earlier.

Yes, don't let our coddled American people know what is happening in their name.

What is worse--this girl's mother had been complaining that her daughter was being watched by some troops. The mother was afraid for her daughter's welfare.

How much did our military care? How much has the media cared?

What a sickening place Bush's America is!

conquering soldiers have been raping and murdering the vanquished for thousands of years... it's too bad that they haven't learned that that behavior just begets more violence...

Do you think that these soldiers were thinking of running for political office as republicans upon their discharge cuz they sure have their pedophiliac tendencies down pat...
