I recently completed a trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson; the "Science in the Capital" series encompassing these novels: Forty Signs of Rain (2004), Fifty Degrees Below (2005), and Sixty Days and Counting (2007). These are set in the not too distant future where our ignoring the disasters of our environmental harm is no longer an option, without explicitly saying so this dystopia is presented because of the non-election of Al Gore. A good read for those so inclined.

Throughout the trilogy, one of the main protagonists reads a website called emersonfortheday. This was a fictional website that now exists along with thoreaufortheday, both in response to the trilogy. These antebellum friends saw ecological disaster long before it became popular and fashionable. Many of the quotations seem as relevant today as 150 years ago. We've been raping the earth for a very long time.
