This isn't a book or a film. It's an old song from the 60s...

Eve of Destruction

The Eastern World
It is explodin'
Violence flarin'
Bullets loadin'
You're old enough to kill
But not for votin'
You don't believe in war
But what's that gun you're totin'
And even the Jordan River has bodies floatin'

But you tell me over, and over, and over again my friend
Ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction

Don't you understand what I'm tryin' to say
And can't you feel the fears I'm feelin' today
If the button is pushed, there's no runnin' away
There'll be no one to save
With the whole world in a grave
Take a look around you boy,
It's bound to scare you boy

And you tell me over, and over, and over again my friend
Ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction

Yeah, my blood's so mad
Feels like coagulatin'
I'm sittin' here, just contemplatin'
I can't twist the truth
It knows no regulation
Handful of senators don't pass legislation
And marches alone can't bring integration
When human respect is disintegratin'
This whole crazy world
Is just too frustratin'

And you tell me over, and over, and over again my friend
Ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction

And think of all the hate there is in Red China
Then take a look around to Selma, Alabama
Ah you may leave here for four days in space
But when you return it's the same old place
The poundin' of the drums
The pride and disgrace
You can bury your dead, but don't leave a trace
Hate your next door neighbor, but don't forget to say grace

But you tell me over, and over, and over, and over again my friend
You don't believe we're on the eve of destruction
No, no, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction

Recorded by Barry McGuire, 1965, very telling then and very telling today....

At least in the 1960s, the youth seemed to have some idea of what was going down!
(love little puns) But I really fear that the youth that are the age we were then, are not the way we were.

Seriously - from about age 30 downwards, they seem to be very antisocial, and only interested in consumerism.

If course, they were either were born after Thatcher, or grew up under the Thatcher/Raygun neo-con grip on news media.

I have a son and a DIL - her parents and i try and describe the differences to them, and it is hard to describe a more socially conscious era that they have not experienced.

they play it here on numerous radio shows all the time. As if the DJs are repeating the same thing, time after after time. But then again, over here in Oz, there are a lot....correction, a whole lot of us stuck in the 60s.

It should be played here in America...again and again. Maybe it would take away some of the clouds in the minds of those Americans who think history doesn't repeat itself...if they have any knowledge of history or care about it at all.

Jayhawk...go to this site: http://www.yikesmagee.com Listen to his protest songs...they're great.
