Post subject:  Who Am I? An Identification Game

This is a game started by Holly at the Liberals Only board.

The games begin when you post a brief clue about a person and then ask "Who Am I?

The person who guesses correctly gets to ask the next WHO Am I queston.

I'll start:

For some reason as a child, I always walked on my tiptoes, but that didn't stop me from knowing how to use my fists. Who am I?

While tbolt is thinking, I'll throw in another one:

I was a member of the Esquires Combo in Alabama. I was upset about a woman. I became very emotional and turned to the bass and organ players and begged them to play something I could sing to, it didn't matter what. The tune they played inspired me to make up one of the prettiest ballads ever written, right there on the spot.

Who am I and what was the name of the ballad?

It's been over a year since anyone has played this game, so let's try to revive it:

Although I had unlimited cash, I refused to spend any or to make public speeches when President Wilson asked me to run for the open Senate seat in Michigan in 1918.

Who Am I?
