A report which was posted on our website on June 4 under the heading "Wolfowitz: Iraq war was about oil" misconstrued remarks made by the US deputy defence secretary, Paul Wolfowitz, making it appear that he had said that oil was the main reason for going to war in Iraq. He did not say that. He said, according to the Department of Defence website, "The ... difference between North Korea and Iraq is that we had virtually no economic options with Iraq because the country floats on a sea of oil. In the case of North Korea, the country is teetering on the edge of economic collapse and that I believe is a major point of leverage whereas the military picture with North Korea is very different from that with Iraq." The sense was clearly that the US had no economic options by means of which to achieve its objectives, not that the economic value of the oil motivated the war. The report appeared only on the website and has now been removed.

If we are to be taken seriously, we have to remain on the level...

thanks...

good point, loo, but would you agree that oil was perhaps a driving force behind the US's invasion of Iraq?

Here's a list of generally discussed reasons for the start of the invasion of Iraq by Georgy Bush:

1. Control of the oil
2. Neutalise a potential threat to Israel.
3. Military bases (to control the oil)
4. To show the world the the US is tough
5. Religious crusade
6. Feed the military/industrial complex
7. Boost the preznit's popularity
8. Stop Iraq from trading oil in Euros
9. A son's attempt to finish what his dad started
10. Undermine the UN
11. Counter any Russian influence in the Mid East
12. Military bases (to threaten the Arabs)
13. An ego trip for wankers with a Napoleon complex
14. A distraction for the ill-informed masses.
15. Empire

Clearly, all the stated reasons for this unprovoked war have been shown to be lies. The WMD, the relationship with al Qaeda, the connection to 9/11 and even the democracy/liberty spin.

So, Ioo...what do YOU think was the motivation for this complete and foolish quagmire Bush has gotten us into??
