Berlin rallies behind baby bear

Berlin Zoo has vowed it will not kill a baby polar bear amid a heated row over whether it is right to hand-rear the cub, who was rejected by his mother.
Knut has been nurtured by a keeper who has slept by his side, bottle-fed him, and strummed him Elvis Presley songs.

But suggestions the three-month-old should have been put down to stop him becoming emotionally and physically reliant on a human have caused outrage.

"We are keeping Knut," Berlin zoo's vet told the BBC. "He's staying alive."

The zoo says Knut should be strong enough to make his first public appearance at the end of this week, having amassed an army of fans who have followed his development - from walking to weaning - in the city's newspapers.

And would those people say we should 'put down' a human baby if it were not going to be able to take care of itself in the future?

If this baby had been in an American zoo, he probably would've been euthanized. You know how it is here....everything ass backwards when it comes to what's right regarding living things, especially animals.

Good for the Germans! :D

Baby polar bear Knut basks in Berlin limelight after reprieve

Knut, a polar bear cub who has become a global sensation after surviving rejection by his mother, made his first public appearance at the Berlin Zoo Friday under the gaze of the world's media.

Knut seemed to lap up the attention from dozens of cameramen and photographers, toddling around his enclosure, occasionally nibbling the boots of his handler Thomas Doerflein and poking his nose into a pond.

Even German Environment Minister Sigmar Gabriel got in on the act, appearing with the little bear after adopting him through the zoo's sponsorship scheme.

The nine-kilogramme (19-pound) bear has triggered a wave of media coverage in recent days after an animal activist said he should have been put down after he and his brother were spurned by their mother following their birth in December.

His brother died, but Knut was reared by the zoo, with Doerflein bottle-feeding him and strumming Elvis Presley songs for him on his guitar.

Despite an impassioned debate over whether it is right to hand-rear the cub, the zoo has vowed it will not kill the bear.

Have to admit- those are really cute pics of the bear. One year old now and getting bigger. Guess bears can be trained so he won't pull a tiger move like in California where it jumped over a fence and mauled someone.

The X-mas ones are OK too showing Kris Kringle in traditional garb and not the commie cola colors was nice.

Welcome back comseur, in Portugal still?

I know where stripey hangs out now.

Howdy DO.g's

yep, still herding Southern Yurrope here...

I'm not sure how trainable they are when it comes to polar bears tho, in nature, polars are the most ferocious, grizzly is much overrated, I'm afraid.

Since Knut turned one now, his handler is not allowed noe moe to play with him "in public", just in case & for safeties sake. But I strongly suspect that they get together away from the crowds... :)

But Knut IS getting stronger and may not know his own strenght.

Pls let stripey1 know that COM's back in town, please? 8)

That failing, could you pls PM me?

Much oblidged!

and while on the subject of polar bears, I thought I'd give you this.... before it disappears...

For the Hun challenged: 3 cubs were just born in Nuremberg, Germany.
The Director (HA!) stated from the very beginning: nope, we won't have them raised by a bottle, come what may. (in reference to Knut in Berlin).

Total jerk, he. The director, not Knut, mind you.

So now, mom just ate 2 of the three cubs.

Guess what? Now they want to raise the 3rd by bottle.

Idiots.

Should have intervened a bit earlier. Hellooooh? These cubs were NOT born in the wild, but in a Zoo!

grrrrr

Sad.

Yeah, it's hard to imagine that people running a zoo can't understand animals don't behave normally in captivity.

Here is a picture of Knut on his birthday in December.

Looks like the Knutster has putt on a little weight. He is reportedly now on a diet. As you can tell, he likes to roll around in the dirt.

Sorry to hear about the demise of two cubs in Nuremberg. Yes, the keepers are idiots.

It is truly sad, COMSEUR.

Hi Dori, I think in this particular case it was more the Zoo director than the keepers.

Anyhoo, here is some good news for now, the last cub seems to do fine, it's a gurrrl... :)

Here some pics... :D
