School Can't Pay Subs So Students Sit in Gym

DeLAND | A Central Florida high school principal says he doesn’t have the money to pay substitute teachers so students are forced to sit in the gym for nearly an hour when their teachers are absent.

Students are daily sent to the gym, which has no heating or air conditioning, and told to sit on the bleachers during the 50-minute period.

DeLand High School Principal Mitch Moyer says there’s no benefit for the students and called the gym “a holding tank.”

Moyer’s school district has cut funding for substitute teachers. As a result, he can only afford to hire three subs a day. On a typical day, 12 to 15 teachers might be out.

School Board member Candace Lankford said it’s “a necessity that cannot be justified for any reason except to save money.”

Why is it necessary to send them to un-heated/un-cooled gym? I'm sure their regular classroom isn't being used. Sounds like the admin staff could at a minimum do a better job of baby-sitting.

The parents should be finding out what's going on. This is very poor administrative decision-making. If those students aren't being supervised by a member of school personnel because a sub can't be found, even if it's the janitor, the school is in deep doodoo if trouble starts and/or someone gets hurt. They'll be looking for money to pay off a lawsuit instead of whining about no money for subs.

In my school if a sub couldn't be found or one couldn't get to the school for awhile, the principal or the asst. principal took the class. Even the secretary sometimes took over, OR the students were divided up and sent to other classrooms. There are counselors and resource teachers who don't have regular classrooms who could be called upon, too. High school teachers have planning times, and those teachers could be used to supervise.

At no time should students of any age be unsupervised in any school, for any reason, especially in an unheated gym in February, even in Florida.
