On March 28, 1986 Frank Zappa appeared on Crossfire to discuss rock music. During the course of the discussion Zappa told John Lofton (censorship advocate) of the Washington Times to kiss his ass. This was in reponse to being called an idiot for thinking the founding fathers gave us the first amendment to defend songs that "glorify Satanism, incest and suicide". After much discussion back-and-forth about national defense, the purpose of government, protecting families, and whatnot, Zappa asked if he could say something about national defense. He went on to state that: "The biggest threat to America is not communism it is moving America towards a fascist theocracy and everything the Reagan administration has been doing is steering us right down that pipe." Predictably, everyone (Novak, Braden, and Lofton) immediately took issue with this, acting as if the very idea was absurd. When asked to give one example of a facist theocracy Zappa replied: "When you have a government that prefers a certain moral code derived from a certain religion and that moral code turns into legislation to suit one certain religious point of view and if that code happens to be very, very right wing almost toward Attila the Hun..." Indeed. As they say, the more things change, the more they remain the same.
