I'm sad to report that Ed Bradley of
60 Minutes has passed away at the age of 65 from leukemia.
I found Bradley's reports on
60 Minutes to always be among the best if not the best. And he made a telling comment once that has always stuck with me. Another channel was doing a news piece on a fancy TV school at some fancy college, and they interviewed Bradley for his comment. Bradley replied that while the school was fine as far as it goes, it was meaningless as a vehicle for replicating practical experience in the field. He said, "These kids need to go out in the street and make mistakes." He really emphasized the "mistakes" and value of making mistakes "in the street" part, and that's always stuck with me. I'm sad I won't be able to meet Ed Bradley in person one day and have a good conversation with him about that comment.
