Rupert’s Wrong Number

MarketBeat Staff

Matt Phillips has this report on an embarrassing glitch in News Corp.’s proxy report:

News Corp. shareholders looking to get help with their proxy votes may get a bit more than they bargained for.

Due to transposed digits, the telephone number listed by News Corp. for proxy solicitation agent Georgeson Inc. connected callers to an automated woman’s voice that urged them to “get together with exciting people everywhere” and gave an additional number to call. As of Tuesday afternoon, the automated voice that answered that second line greeted callers with a sultry “hey, sexy guy.” The voice went on to eventually ask callers for their credit-card numbers to chat with “working girls,” among others.

“We don’t recommend people spend too much time on the phone to that particular number,” says News Corp. spokesman Andrew Butcher, who acknowledged the typo. He said News Corp. opted not to correct the number because — thankfully — there were plenty of other numbers investors could call in the company’s filings, which were issued in relation to required shareholder approval of Liberty Media’s asset swap with News Corp. The deal, which was part of Liberty’s bid to take control of DirecTV Group, was announced in December.

Though the error appeared in a both a preliminary proxy filed Feb. 5 as well as in a March 1 definitive proxy, Marketbeat’s was the first call the company fielded about the mix up, Mr. Butcher said. “So it’s not a major concern of investors,” he said.

By the way, News Corp. shareholders still looking for a number for Georgeson should call 1-800-506-7142.

Btw, is this Liberty as in Jarry Falwell? If so, the share holders would like to spend lots of time with that number...
