REV. John Newton, circa 1765
John Newton of Liverpool served on and captained several slave ships in the mid-18th century. A devout Christian who read prayers twice a day to his crews, Newton wrote the hymn How Sweet the Name of Jesus Sounds while still trading in slaves. He would later write Amazing Grace.Courtesy of the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, England
I imagine this could also go in the RELIGION forum, since John Newton was a REVERAND as well as a slave trader.
I'll never hear the song
Amazing Grace again without thinking of the horrible way the composer of that song made his living.
