John Newton of Liverpool served on and captained several slave ships in the mid-18th century. A devout Christian who read prayers twice a day to his crews, Newton wrote the hymn How Sweet the Name of Jesus Sounds while still trading in slaves. I imagine this could also go in the RELIGION forum, since John Newton was a REVERAND as well as a slave trader.

I'll never hear the song Amazing Grace again without thinking of the horrible way the composer of that song made his living.
