Caroline Kennedy: Clinton Senate Replacement?

ABC News reports that Hillary Clinton's Senate seat might be filled by none other than Caroline Kennedy:

Another Senator Kennedy? The crazy speculation about Hillary Clinton's Senate seat may not be so crazy after all. A Democrat who would know tells ABC News that New York governor David Paterson has talked to Caroline Kennedy about taking the seat, which was once held by her uncle, Robert F. Kennedy. It's not exactly shocking that Paterson would reach out to one of the most highly respected public figures in New York, but this is: Sources say Kennedy is considering it, and has not ruled out coming to Washington to replace Hillary Clinton in the Senate.

I think she'd make a marvelous replacement for Clinton!

After a week of coy courtship and low-key feelers, Kennedy began working the phones in earnest Monday -- and signed up major Democratic fixer Josh Isay, who has deep connections to New York powerhouses Sen. Charles Schumer, Mayor Michael Bloomberg and the Rev. Al Sharpton...

Hiring Isay accomplishes several goals for Kennedy. It signals her seriousness to Gov. David Paterson, who has been cool to her weeklong whisper campaign; it initiates her courtship of state power brokers who know her only through the media and the History Channel; and it "scares the s---" out of lesser-known Democrats actively pursuing the appointment, the New York Democrat said.

Although she may be helping herself with her New York moves, one longtime operative active in New York City campaigns said Kennedy may also be getting a boost from the scandal surrounding Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich's attempts to fill Barack Obama's Senate seat: If Paterson appoints a star such as Kennedy, he can probably spare himself any allegation that he's been bought off.

I heard a Kennedy (Carrie) cousin on an AP radio news broadcast say Caroline was qualified because she was a woman and a mother. My wife would be qualified with those standards—one of the least qualified people I know. Sometimes relatives need to just shut up.

Well, if that's all it takes, why did we protest Sarah Palin being the VP candidate? :mrgreen:

I can't imagine why the Kennedy cousin made such a shallow statement, unless she may harbor some resentment towards Caroline. Jackie Kennedy didn't particularly like the way Bobby's kids were being raised, and thus kept her two away from them as much as possible.

We do know that Caroline is smart....a law degree from Columbia and another degree from Harvard. She is an attorney, editor, writer and member of the New York and Washington, D.C. bar associations.

She's written several books (or co-authored):

There may be people (males and females) sitting in the Senate now who are less qualilfied to be there than is Caroline Kennedy. But let's let the governor do his job and see what happens. :wink:

I am so hoping Patterson will pick Caroline Kennedy to serve. She would have to face an election in '10 and another in '12. But I think she would make a fantastic Senator!

The more INTELLIGENCE and INTEGRITY we can put back into our government the better. If it comes in the form of Caroline Kennedy, so be it. I hope the governor of NY sees it that way, too. :wink:

Just imagine, a Senator who authored or coauthored a number of books rather than a President who read one or two.

Caroline Kennedy Paterson's Choice: Officials

The AP reports that officials are saying Caroline Kennedy will be New York's next senator:

Officials say the daughter of the late President John F. Kennedy will be the governor's choice to fill the New York Senate seat being vacated by Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Two people close to Gov. David Paterson tell The Associated Press they believe Caroline Kennedy will be his choice, but the governor cautions he's still looking.

On Thursday, the governor disputed reports that he would hire a "caretaker" to keep the seat warm until the 2010 election.

Speaking to reporters at the Executive Mansion Thursday, Paterson said he intends to select someone with long-term interest in the job, not someone who would simply hold the seat until a special election next year.

I wish her the very best of luck if she is indeed Gov. Paterson's choice.
