Maybe A Proud Liberal can give us some insight into this situation:

McCain challenger launches bid to unseat Arizona senator

The Republican party's most recent presidential nominee has earned a primary challenge from the right on President's Day.

J.D. Hayworth, a former Arizona congressman and radio host, is scheduled to formally announce Monday that's he's challenging Republican John McCain for his U.S. Senate seat.

Though his intentions have been known for months, Hayworth will formally announce his candidacy during a rally at his new campaign office in Phoenix at 10 a.m. local time (noon ET). The event kicks off what is scheduled to be a three-day, 10-stop campaign swing through the state.

Hayworth, who served for six terms in the House before losing his 2006 re-election bid, stepped down last month as host of his conservative talk radio program in Phoenix. While he says he respects McCain's service, he says McCain's been in Washington too long and isn't conservative enough.

“JD” (as he likes to be called) started out on a local TV station as a sportscaster. He was indeed elected six times to the House until they redrew the districts. His rhetoric is right of Attila the Hun. His radio show was on the same station as Limbaugh and Hannity during the afternoon commute. He is truly a blowhard pompous ass.

I don’t think he has much of chance in the primary against McCain BUT if he does win, he would be the weaker candidate and would give the Dem nominee (unknown at this time) a very good shot at being elected. It should be noted that Independents during the primary have the opportunity to vote a ballot of their choice. This sometimes leads to party members reregistering as Independents to sabotage the other party’s primary, similar to the crossover vote of 1972 Presidential primary that gave George Wallace the Michigan primary because Repugs could vote whichever ballot they wanted.

How much more conservative would he want McCain to be? One thing's for sure, according to Rachel Maddow last night, McCain is one of the biggest liars in DC. She was going after those HYPOCRITES in Congress and it was one of her best shows.
