Report: U.S. Conducting Secret Missions Inside Iran

Sun Jan 16,12:33 PM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States has been conducting secret reconnaissance missions inside Iran to help identify potential nuclear, chemical and missile targets, The New Yorker magazine reported Sunday.

The article, by award-winning reporter Seymour Hersh, said the secret missions have been going on at least since last summer with the goal of identifying target information for three dozen or more suspected sites.

Hersh quotes one government consultant with close ties to the Pentagon (news - web sites) as saying, "The civilians in the Pentagon want to go into Iran and destroy as much of the military infrastructure as possible."

One former high-level intelligence official told The New Yorker, "This is a war against terrorism, and Iraq (news - web sites) is just one campaign. The Bush administration is looking at this as a huge war zone. Next, we're going to have the Iranian campaign."

The White House said Iran is a concern and a threat that needs to be taken seriously. But it disputed the report by Hersh, who last year exposed the extent of prisoner abuse at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq.

"We obviously have a concern about Iran. The whole world has a concern about Iran," Dan Bartlett, a top aide to President Bush (news - web sites), told CNN's "Late Edition."

Of The New Yorker report, he said: "I think it's riddled with inaccuracies, and I don't believe that some of the conclusions he's drawing are based on fact."

Bartlett said the administration "will continue to work through the diplomatic initiatives" to convince Iran -- which Bush once called part of an "axis of evil" -- not to pursue nuclear weapons.

"No president, at any juncture in history, has ever taken military options off the table," Bartlett added. "But what President Bush has shown is that he believes we can emphasize the diplomatic initiatives that are underway right now."

COMMANDO TASK FORCE

Bush has warned Iran in recent weeks against meddling in Iraqi elections.

The former intelligence official told Hersh that an American commando task force in South Asia is working closely with a group of Pakistani scientists who had dealt with their Iranian counterparts.

The New Yorker reports that this task force, aided by information from Pakistan, has been penetrating into eastern Iran in a hunt for underground nuclear-weapons installations.

In exchange for this cooperation, the official told Hersh, Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf has received assurances that his government will not have to turn over Abdul Qadeer Khan, the father of Pakistan's atomic bomb, to face questioning about his role in selling nuclear secrets to Iran, Libya and North Korea (news - web sites).

Hersh reported that Bush has already "signed a series of top-secret findings and executive orders authorizing secret commando groups and other Special Forces units to conduct covert operations against suspected terrorist targets in as many as 10 nations in the Middle East and South Asia."

Defining these as military rather than intelligence operations, Hersh reported, will enable the Bush administration to evade legal restrictions imposed on the CIA (news - web sites)'s covert activities overseas.

MS -
You score one don't you. Obviously you noticed that Catherine put the "Iraq" instead of "Iran" and you were quick to make your little comment. From your comment though, it doesn't look as if you even bothered though to check out the article :!: .
I noticed that Catherine put the "Q" instead of the "N'. Sad to say, they can be interchanged. When you read the article, it's as if we are going down the same path we went through 2 years ago.

Tis time for a reality check.

Clinton says Saddam has nukes - good...
Bush says Saddam has nukes - bad...

Clinton calls for regime change in Iraq - good...
Bush imposes regime change in Iraq - bad...

What the fu**

Somewhere, somehow, the Intelligence Community has duped many presidents during their terms of office.

This burning issue of Treason In Wartime is falling on deaf ears.

It Will be, one day, the justification for the repeal of the National Security Act of 1947, which has been violated from the very day it was signed by Harry Truman.

Need proof?

http://www.ratical.org/ratville/JFK/ST/ST.html

100,000 copies of the book, THE SECRET TEAM--THE CIA AND ITS ALLIES IN CONTROL OF THE UNTIED STATES AND THE WORLD were removed from the bookstore shelves across this country, the land of the free and home of the brave.

Fortunately, the author, now deceased, placed the entire book on the Internet down loadable for FREE at the above site. He was more interested in getting the word out than making a profit.

Should you choose to argue points in this post further, I suggest an interesting view of how and why our country is in the quandary we face today.

Plausible Deni ability is a double edged sword. On the one side, it allows the president to deny knowledge of and for given covert activities. On the other side, the potential for treason and sedition are rampant, especially within organizations that hide behind the cloak of "sources and methods", the sacrosanct mantra of the CIA, DIA, NSA, State Department and the other 15 so called "intelligence" organizations within the so called "intelligence community".

Let go of the old propaganda and educate yourself! I promise it will not hurt one bit. In fact, the light may come on!

Bests,
John

The Bushies cling to Clinton like a drowning person, John.

Your post was excellent, but don't expect any light to come on for MS..he prefers to grope in the dark, kind of like a mole. It is those of his ilk that are so much like the characters in the Edgar Allen Poe story of the Masque of the Red Death...I doubt if he's ever read it, though.

Alas, Catherine, I do feel you are succinctly correct!

It wrenches my heart and mind when the old adage comes creeping from the hard disk of past lessons...."If the student failed to learn, the instructor failed to teach"--author unknown.

While teaching multi-nationals in various countries throughout the world in the arts of Unconventional Warfare, and using the lessons of Mao Tse Tung's Phases of guerrilla warfare (some of which have come back to bite us BIG time), it became abundantly clear that lesson plans be damned, you did what was necessary to teach joe lunchbucket how and when to blow up a train with relatively sophisticated field expedient demolitions, not unlike those being used against our troops in Iraq.

Not all those trained were joe lunchbucket. Some prominent names come to mind for plans gone awry fueled by the zeal of CIA cowboys who just had to create atmospheres of insurrection around the globe.

Not discussed much these days are the names Castro, Guavera, Pinochet, Noriega, Allawi, all of whom fall into the same catagory as Osama. We sure know how to pick 'em, don't we!?

Yes, Iraq and Iran and most countries of the Middle East, including Pakistan except Israel of course, were the beneficiaries of this training from the late fifties until the late eighties.

All the more reason to read "The Secret Team". I know, you can lead a horse to water.........frustrateing, ain't it?

We took thirty years to create many "Laurence of Arabia" type individuals, not unlike Osama bin Laden whom we trained and equipped to fight the Russians for ten years in Afghanistan. So, you can see we did our job quite well....and it is now a documentary with a much younger Osama smiling brilliantly. To be released this summer, we hope! State and CIA are not gonna be so happy with this. Tough!

Bests,
John
