The Guardian

When the leading Republican and rightwing pundit Alan Keyes was asked what he thought of Mary Cheney, the lesbian daughter of the US vice-president, he called her "a selfish hedonist". If his own daughter came out as a lesbian, said Mr Keyes, he would say the same thing.

So when Mr Keyes' only daughter, Maya Marcel-Keyes, declared herself a "liberal queer" at a public rally he lived up to his word. Her parents turned her out of their house, broke off all communication and stopped paying her university tuition fees.

Ms Keyes told a rally supporting gay young people in Maryland: "We have to figure out what we can do to make sure that during those times when it seems like everything in the world is turning against them, like everyone in the world is rejecting them, that they know there are resources out there they can turn to; there are people out there who will say to them, 'I care'."

Ms Keyes joins a list of gay people with rightwing relatives, including Mary Cheney and Candace Gingrich, the sister of Republican congressman Newt Gingrich. But Mr Keyes, a darling of the religious right, has been more outspoken on the issue than most.

Ms Keyes says her parents were "not too pleased" when she came out. "Things just came to a head. Liberal queer plus conservative Republican just doesn't mesh well."

Her older brother has offered her somewhere to stay and she has been given a scholarship to continue at college.

"My daughter is an adult, and she is responsible for her own actions. What she chooses to do has nothing to do with my work or political activities," Mr Keyes said in a statement.

Ms Keyes says she loves her parents and "totally understands" their position.

This is not news to this forum. I posted the story last week. At that time, there was no article written about it. under one of the threads here about how "The Right Turns Left When It's To Their Advantage". Thanks to The Guardian, there now is an article about this. I'm sure some others will pile on Alan (for at least being consistant in his assinine beliefes) but NOT the other Repubs whose policies are anti-gay but they themselves have gay children. That's media hypocricy for ya!

Dick/Lynne Cheney are hypocrites. Remember when at one of those "staged" Town Meetings a questions was asked him by a participant and Dick said the President makes the policy (which happens to be anti-gay). So, he loves his daughter but he's gonna stand by George W who "makes the policy" which is opposition to your daughter's sexuality? Oh, how Republican!

Barny Frank, an out Demo, is still being re-elected by his constituency and proudly represents his distict in Massachussettes and they love him - BRAVO!

Newt Gingrich is a hypocrite for leaving his ill wife (she had cancer) for a staffer and then going after Barney Frank the way he did. Newt ruitinely took anti-gay positions in Congress but then his sister comes out and he gets all soft on his anti-gay stance.

Bill Gephart is not in Congress anymore but he mentioned his lesbian daughter during the 2004 Campaign showing he isl proud of her and is not trying to "hide her in the closet" like Dick & Lynne Cheney!

Alan Keyes once again proves what a fool he is. But in a strange way, I give him credit for at least being consistant unlike the other Repubs with gay children. But he's still a fool.

I have a friend, believe it or not, who disowned her gay daughter. We have clashed on this, but she is adamant--she will not have a sinner under her roof.

The girl is a wonderful person who is working now to 'become straight'. It is all so shameful and sad. But the righteous know no shame.

I continue to bug this friend but I cannot overcome the Catholic church.

Does anyone else remember where Jesus said to disown your homosexual child? I can't seem to find that in my Bible.
