A rush-hour evacuation drill of four West Loop office buildings emptied 3,000 willing participants from their cubicles, sending them in orderly, chatting streams across the river in a drill city officials called a promising test of Chicago's response to a terrorist attack.
Despite blaring sirens and a hypothetical scenario involving a bomb going off in the Loop, Thursday afternoon's evacuation of high-rises at
Monroe Street and Wacker Drive was lighthearted, and participants said it seemed surprisingly quick.
Nevertheless, it was a serious undertaking, many said. Chicago officials said the drill would be parsed to improve responses in real emergencies. Federal agencies and fire departments from around the country asked for lessons learned and even DVDs of the heavily videotaped event.
