Congressman: Ghraib abuse a 'sex ring,' not torture

RAW STORY
Published: Friday October 13, 2006

Congressman Christopher Shays (R-CT) said in a debate Wednesday night that the abuses at Abu Ghraib were part of a "sex ring," but not torture, RAW STORY has learned.

"It was outrageous, outrageous involvement of National Guard troops," Shays indicated in a debate, "who were involved in a sex ring and they took pictures of soldiers who were naked, and they did other things that were just outrageous. But it wasn't torture."

Shays has since indicated in interviews that though he does consider it sex abuse, and believes sex abuse is torture, he believes it was "more about pornography than torture."

A video of Shays' remarks can be viewed below.

So, Shays is of the opinion that rape, sodomy, and other forms of sexual abuse aren't torture...hmmmm...well, one thing's for sure. The way the Repubs like Shays can spin their opinions is a form of torture for those of us who know what they're doing and what they're capable of. Someone ought to ask Shays if it was a member of his family who was involved with this kind of treatment, would he look at it so casually? I think not. These were just Iraqis to Shays, though, and therefore of no consequence.

This is also another prime example of the insensitive attitude so many of the Bush supporters have toward the Iraqi people and their culture.
