note: this is a rough draft post; I still can't find a copy online of Justice O'Connor's report. But I chose to drop a copy of this post here regardless because I don't see the story of Maher Arar covered on this forum yet, and I know it will be of great interest to the good people here. While this latest chapter in the story of rendition is contemporary, rendition itself, unforutnately, is nothing new. -GR

Court Report Slams U.S., Canada on False Suspect

All Things Considered, September 20, 2006 · Maher Arar is a Syrian-born Canadian computer engineer who was falsely accused of having terrorist ties. Canadian investigators deported him to the United States in 2002, where he was arrested at JFK Airport.

He was then sent to Syria for a year, where, according to a report released by a Canadian judge Tuesday, he was tortured.

The report, which exonerates Arar of any wrongdoing, sharply criticizes both American and Canadian authorities for his mistreatment. Melissa Block talks with Arar. ... Id=6111983 ... Id=6103594 ... Id=6102261

6 Project O Canada "[Garry] Loeppky [Deputy Commissioner of the RCMP] explained that Project O Canada was a multi-jurisdictional/disciplinary/functional team established shortly after 9/11 to deal with criminal activity related to national security. Loeppky said it is an ongoing investigation, and wasn’t certain he could say where it operates. He confirmed that Project O Canada was created before the INSETs. He also explained that a project called “A” O Canada refers to an investigation in the A Division jurisdiction (Ottawa), while a “C” O Canada refers to Montreal."

That other party, they work for people who don't need help.
That's all there is to it."
