The Antiwar South
by RJ Eskow | Oct 13 2006 -

A new poll documents the South's dramatic change of heart about the war in Iraq. By a clear majority, Southerners polled by North Carolina State University believe the war should not have taken place and want either a partial or total withdrawal of troops.

sheesh....now they realize the war was wrong?? where was everyone 4 years ago?

does it take 3,000 dead troops and countless civilians for americans to realize that war isn't worth it??

I often find myself annoyed with people who didn't see everything four years ago...and are against the war now, as thousands of our troops, (and innocent Iraqi civilians! have died!). But I am glad, that at least now, (better now than never, right?!), they are at least realizing that war is not good. But, yes, I do wish that all those people could have opened their eyes four years ago...so that maybe, at least, Bush wouldn't still be 'president.'

The South has a tendency to be a bit slow about all things. I've lived in the South all my life, and it's just that way. I'm not saying that as a criticism, although I always believed that my area would have to be dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century, and it sure enough was...it's still moaning, groaning, and pouting. We do have brown-bagging at some area restaurants, and we can buy beer in one town in my county, but not in the county seat  ...go figure...it's 12 miles to the beer-friendly town, and we have two thriving ABC stores.

If my area seems to be turning against the war in Iraq, believe me, it's a given that most of the rest of the South has, too. We have casual friends who are Republicans....they like Bush but not the war. Last night they left for Raleigh. One of their friends out there had just learned that her son had been killed in Iraq. THAT I do not understand. How can anyone who hates the war like Bush?

it's not just the south...we have our share up north too.

reports claim that almost 65% of americans are now against the war. so, where is this loud voice? i sure hope they are heard come election time.
