Washington- At least 25 million voters have already participated via absentee ballot in Tuesday's hotly-contested congressional elections - a record number, according to Paul Gronke, director of the Early Voting Information Centre based in Portland, Oregon, at Reed College. An estimated 200 million US citizens are qualified to vote in the elections, which will decide 33 of the US Senate's 100 seats, and all 435 seats in the lower House of Representatives.
The growing number of absentee voters is a question of convenience for most people, Gronke said in an interview Monday.
In the 2004 presidential elections, 16.8 million people voted by mail. In the 2002 mid-term elections, it was 12.5 million.
The northwest state of Oregon in fact is unique for having totally banned polling places. All 3.5 million voters must submit their choices via mail.
