AP calls Va. for Webb; Democrats take Senate

Jim Webb has won the Senate race in Virginia, which gives control of the U.S. Senate--at least nominally--over to the Democratic Party, the Associated Press is reporting.

"An adviser to Allen, speaking on condition of anonymity because his boss had not formally decided to end the campaign, said the senator wanted to wait until most of canvassing was completed before announcing his decision," write Liz Sidoti and Bob Lewis. The announcement is expected "possibly as early as Thursday evening."

his bosses told him to back off if he has any further political ambitions.
