Perhaps what we're seeing is a "God Squad" rather than presidential contenders.
I, for one, am so sick of it. Right now, we have in my area a referendum coming up for vote on Jan.8 to decide whether or not the restaurants in the area can sell liquor by the drink. The churches are lobbying hard to make sure it doesn't pass...for the second or third time. Huge billboards show a scary-looking skeleton behind the wheel of a purple convertible. Hovering above the car is a Grim Reaper. "DON'T LET DEATH RIDE ON OUR HIGHWAYS! VOTE NO ON JAN.8!"
What a hoot...never mind that we have two ABC stores in the area. Never mind that one of the towns in the county sells beer (the county seat doesn't...another hoot). Wine is sold at all the grocery stores and some of the restaurants already have brown-bagging and wine licenses. Never mind that larger towns within an hour's driving distance seem to do just fine with their populace who are allowed to order a nice drink with their restaurant meals.
One idiot even wrote into the local paper that Jesus really turned water into 'nonalcoholic" wine!
The people living within the city limits of the town are the only ones who get to vote in this referendum...not the entire county.
I'm tired of the church goers dictating to everyone....I'm tired of dictators in general, and especially religious ones.
How refreshing it would be if a candidate would say.."I think religion is a personal decision and I am a firm believer in the separation of church and state...'nuff said." Of course, he or she wouldn't get to say much more, but it would be a nice whiff of fresh air!
