Court Rejects Blocking Arizona Voter Law
By Paul Davenport
The Associated Press

Saturday 21 April 2007

Phoenix - A federal appeals court on Friday rejected an attempt to halt enforcement of an Arizona law that requires voters to show identification before casting a ballot and submit proof of citizenship when registering to vote.

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a trial judge's refusal last year to block the requirement while a legal challenge awaits trial in federal court in Phoenix.

"Now we know we get to enforce the law while the lawsuit is pending," state Solicitor General Mary O'Grady said.

The 2004 law requires that voters at polling places produce government-issued picture ID or two pieces of other non-photo identification specified by the law. Other parts of the law dealt with ineligibility of illegal immigrants to receive some government services and benefits.

And the Bush courts strike again.

If it wasn't so sickening it would be laughable!

One of things I did during my disappearing act of October and November was to work as a poll worker. My job was to check these IDs. Being the shy person I am every time someone complained about this law, I asked if the person had voted for the law. You see the Arizona law was an initiative ballot measure. To a person they answered yes. The concept that they had had an opportunity to stop the law in its tracks seemed almost foreign to what little thought processes they possessed.

Laws like this just distract us from the real problem; the concept of having to register to vote is bogus. One should be able to vote if one can show identity and location of residence on Election Day. Registration lists just give those with nefarious intentions the chance to deprive someone their franchise. Imagine Florida and Ohio without the chance to "purge" rolls for the crime of voting while black.
