Remote camping can be defined as simply pullling off a road in a National Forest or on BLM land and setting up a camp. Usually there are rules as to how far off the road you can camp and how long you can stay in one place. There are also rules concerning leaving a clean camp and building fires.

Sounds like a great thing, but there are some realities that have to be dealt with.

First of all...though Forest and BLM lands are supposed to be public lands...they are really managed in terms of the local economy. You are also subject to county and state laws....and to the "whims" of the local residents...who sometimes resent the Federal control of this land and your use of it.

The land is multi-use.....there is also cattle and sheep grazing (usually anywhere there is grass and water)....mining....oil/gas exploration & wells....and timber cutting.

And in the fall...hunting. If you don't's probably best to just leave the forest.

If you think you can have some privacy and freedom out camping...maybe you should think again.

Most forests have fire spotter flights that will know where you are soon after you set up camp (light planes). These planes are equipped with infrared and other sensors....can track a tracking bug over long distances.....and you can be spotted visually.

Usually after they determine your location a FS employee will drive by. Also any number of undercover "cops" (as operate in all counties) might drive by. And possibly just someone out driving around or checking on cattle, etc. Your job being to guess which is which.

They can (after determining your location) "sneak" up on you and observe what you are doing. They will be looking for something they can use against you. This might be from a fairly good distance.

They sometimes will hide back in the trees and make loud noises to try to get you to shoot into the trees...which it is not legal to do.

They can inspect your campsite after you leave.

They can and will get into your vehicle at a campsite if they want to know what you are doing....and can plant a tracker or audio bug.

Some of the more often used campsites can be already bugged...usually audio.

In some states & areas there is a "scam" going on where people will leave something by a road (motorcycle helmet?) stop to pick it up and they will claim you stole this from their campsite. Be warned.

With the war on drugs....terrorism....and your civil really have no privacy.

Welcome to the Surveillance Society....enjoy your stay.
