On July 16, 1936, photographer Walker Evans took a leave of absence from the Farm Security Administration (FSA) to accept a summer assignment with Fortune magazine. Evans, who had begun working as a photographer in 1928, had developed a modest reputation by the time he was hired in October 1935 by Roy Stryker, leader of the FSA photographic unit. Stryker agreed to give him leave for the magazine assignment on condition that his photographs remain government property.


On July 16, 1790, Congress declared the city of Washington in the District of Columbia the permanent capital of the United States. Soon after, President George Washington commissioned French engineer Pierre-Charles L'Enfant to create a plan for the city.

1862 Congress authorizes uses of Blacks for military service.

1898, during the Spanish-American War, Spanish troops in Santiago, Cuba, surrendered to U.S. forces. The start of successful US incursions in foreign wars as the Phillipines was also a target.

1944, 322 people were killed when a pair of ammunition ships exploded in Port Chicago, Calif. Crew loading ships were mostly black.

1955, Disneyland debuted in Anaheim, Calif. The roots of fantasyland USA are planted.

1959 Famous jazz singer Billie Holiday, noted for her controversial antilynching ballad "Strange Fruit", dies in New York City

1967 John Coltrane, jazz composer and stylistic saxophonist, dies in Long Island, NY. He was recognized as the leader of the New Free Jazz Movement of the '60s.

1996, TWA Flight 800, a Paris-bound Boeing 747, exploded and crashed off Long Island, N.Y., shortly after leaving John F. Kennedy International Airport, killing all 230 people aboard. Some still question whether it was shot down by friendly fire.

1566 Barlolome deLas Casas, a significant chronicler of the Spanish conquest in the new world and who will reveal the great harm Christopher Columbus levied upon Arawalk Indians, dies in Madrid, Spain.

1863 The 54th Massachusetts, first Black regiment from the North, leads charge on Fort Wagner.

1940, the Democratic national convention in Chicago nominated President Roosevelt for an unprecedented third term in office. Lets hope the same doesn't happen for GWB.

1947, President Truman signed the Presidential Succession Act, which placed the speaker of the House and the Senate president pro tempore next in the line of succession after the vice president.

1969, a car driven by Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., plunged off a bridge on Chappaquiddick Island near Martha's Vineyard; passenger Mary Jo Kopechne died.

1984, a gunman opened fire at a McDonald's fast food restaurant in San Ysidro, Calif., killing 21 people before being shot dead by police. He didn't like his happy meal.

Social reformer and pacifist Jane Addams was born on September 6, 1860 in Cedarville, Illinois. After graduating from Rockford College in 1881, Addams left her native Illinois for Philadelphia where she enrolled at the Woman's Medical College. Forced by poor health to abandon her studies, Addams spent the next two years as an invalid. After regaining her strength, she embarked upon a tour of Europe. It was there that she found the inspiration for much of her work in social reform.
