Being an ingenious tiger, I have my ways of dealing with power failures. And since that heat storm we had last weekend is headed East right now, I'm going to share some of them with you.

One of the things that happens when the power goes out for any extended length of time is that you lose all the food in your refrigerator and freezer, right? Bad news bears...

Well, here at chez Stripey, we only use half the freezer for frozen food and the other half, we fill with 2 liter soda bottles that have been emptied and filled 3/4 with water, creating our own little portable reservoir of coldness... when the power goes out, we quickly shuffle a few bottles from the freezer into the fridge... altho it won't help in a really long power outage... it will keep everything chilled for at least a day... maybe two...

One of the benefits to having food in only half the freezer, is that it is easier to use it up before the bottles thaw out and the food goes bad.

It works...

:D

For personal comfort, MrsStripey and I like to use wet kerchiefs placed around our necks. Sitting in a cool bath or taking a cool shower helps too...

And of course, the most logical... Drink lots of water.

Now according to the weather channel this AM... Minnesota and points south are to be under the blazing sun this weekend... If you live anywhere near there, please, give my suggestions a try...

Be Careful!

Great suggestions Stripey.

I have been wondering if it is possible to have a small wooden 'decorative' windmill (or 24) that could at least power something. Feeding into a bank of batteries it might provide some energy--not a lot, but at least some?

We have a law that says we can't have windmills here, that is why I said the 'decorative' kind.

Guess I should look into some of the 'green' sites, eh?

Oh, that was a knock down, drag out battle back in the days of my 'eye to eye' battles with local government. Heck, we are a rural area, windmills are natural for places like this.

But I lost.

I wish I had tips to add to Stripey's for how to beat hot weather--I think we are all going to need them.

Got solar?

Did you lose it here?

I doubt it.

Holy crap its hot here. Stripes I can see you seeking shade to get cool. Ive had to fix a vehicle for 3 days now and it has been around 99 or 101. Heat index "they" say was around 112. The humidity here really stinks, too. Its just incredible how hot it has been. I know I said heat usually doesnt bother me but this week it did. My hat goes off to all of those who dealt with no power for days on end. Whhheeeww.

Humidity has been opressive. Even people used to heat have complained it feels hotter this year because they are dealing with high humidity along with it.

I doesn't generally get horribly hot here--but it has been miserably uncomfortable this year. My fan just blows hot, moist air around. I still would be worse off without it.

I feel for those people who have had to deal with this and no electricity.

No global climate change? Hah!

I can empathize, justin and dori... at least about the heat part... 113 is serious heat and can be quite deadly, as shown by our 164 heat caused deaths here in california but dayum... I can NOT imagine how bad it is with 60 or 70% humidity...

passes my eastern pals some nice ice water...

The climatologists that believe global warming is taking place say that it, global warming, will produce more violent weather... more extremes for longer periods of time.

I have only been a weather fanatic since the big tornado outbreak in 2003, but... since then, I have read countless news articles chronicling this disaster or that, this extreme weather phenomenom or that, and in nearly each one a common observation is uttered...

"I have not seen storms this strong, so consistantly, so long standing, ever."

And that's what happens when the climate starts to change, if you ask me... and even if you didn't... I still think that's what starts to happen... And soon, we will ALL begin to realize that our weather is getting worse... and it's going to get a lot worse... got drought? yes wide spread... got flood? yes and lots of it too... got wildfires? yes, starting sooner and more than usual... got severe weather in August? yes and it's unusual according to the weather EXPERTS on TWC...

got republican denial?

why yes, of course  , everything is just peachy to those that continually live with their heads up their asses...

Well, one of those Republicans peeked his head out for a few seconds. Pat Robertson said we have to do something about global climate change that is taking place because of human activity.

Never thought I would see the day!

It is back into the 80s here, but the humidity is still way too high. All that gulf air blowing over us...
