well, 5 years later, and it appears we're going to go thru several days of patriotic bliss.

as i got the morning paper, like i do every sunday, i like to go thru the ads and see if anything is on sale that i might need. what got my attention was that almost every advertiser had made some mention of 9-11...even the damn grocery stores.

now, i can see maybe the newspaper having a one page thing about never forgetting etc etc...no problem....but, when stores start showing tributes under the 25% off ads, it kind of cheapens the process. what's next? will car dealers have a 9-11 memorial day special too? it seems that 9-11 is or has become more of a commercial process than one of rememberance.

it wasn't until the next summer, 2002, while browsing around a flea market, i happen to walk past a booth that some people had there. they were selling some cheaply made tiffany lamps. you know, shiney brass stems and some flimsy glass shades around them that looked like if you touched them, the glass would fall out.

anyways, what was their biggest sellers? the tiffany lamps with the twin towers on them!! some had large patriotic eagles painted in the background behind the towers and others had the american flag waving behind them....all sure to bring a patiotic tear to one's eye. (yea, right)

i wanted to bust every single lamp on display...not because they were cheaply made (and high priced) but because these people were exploiting an american disaster.

likewise, i still can't forget asshole bush, standing on a pile of rubble, with a bullhorn in his hand, trying to sound like some commander-in-chief rallying the troops...yet, he had a smile on his face. that image burned itself in me for some reason....it just wasn't sincere. but, bush also was exploiting 9-11, and over the past 5 years, i have noticed that many others do as well.

9-11: the perfect excuse to go to war
9-11: the perfect excuse to have a sale
9-11: the perfect excuse to campaign on...even the politicians who are not of new york state
9-11: the perfect excuse to belittle the opposing political team

i don't see as much advertising for any other american disaster as i have seen with 9-11, and i'm at the point where i may not care to remember 9-11 in the ways i'm being forced by having all the garbage shoved down my throat. i really don't give a fuck if carrots are cheaper monday in rememberance of 9-11. i don't care to buy your cheap tiffany lamps that tried to appeal to my weak emotional side so that you can make 2 bucks in your pocket.

how about if americans just ask that they cut the commercial/political remembering of 9-11 ?

Fantastic post, mga!

I feel just as you do...I'm not looking at any newspaper, any television, and I'm sure as hell not participating in any remembrance activity at all. I'm going mountain biking with my husband today, and tomorrow, I'll probably spend time on the discussion boards, and that's as close to the "memorial" as I intend to place myself.

What would we say to a PERSON who wallowed so much in the memory of something bad that had happened to him or her? We'd be recommending intense therapy immediately! The entire nation is in a sick frenzy...and I can just bet OBL and the other "terrorists" are loving every moment of it...free publicity for them! Free publicity for the GOP, Bush, and the neocons...what could be more assinine? (Well, Bush talking, but I never listen to him, either.)

I have to agree with you both. I have been saying, if 9/11 is so bad, why are we celebrating it?

Is anyone but the peace brigade talking about Bush killing more people than 9/11 did?

Thanks for the rant mga. It is about time people wake up!

and the best part was last night while watching tv, a commercial comes on for a "gold CLAD commemorative 9-11 coin, and the impression of the WTC was done in alleged "pure silver" from the remains of the WTC. and the best part of the coin was the little silver thing of the towers was able to stand up on the coin!! LOL what a cheap piece of crap that was...then they had the balls to say it normally listed for $49.95....

this is why i don't get involved with it. not only does every politician exploit it, but now so does madison avenue.

and my other gripe about 9-11 is that every fire fighting company in america feels it's a great time to get out there and pan-handle for money preying upon people's emotions

even church's try to cash in by having special services giving yet another excuse to pass the basket around.

A desperate act of change has become a desperate grab for change. I have never seen so much propaganda about an event that will shape and develop the mindset of history for generations. (if we last that long) And it was only september 10th. I can't imagine how thick and syrupy it will get today.

Everywhere was history being rewritten to fit their mould. Like the Paul Revere story and how it became a part of history. We need a Howard Zinn to write this up in his book- Stories that Hollywood would never tell.

I love alternative radio. Please listen and support this show.

This would be a good day for all of us to write in our rememberances of this day in Catherines thread about what we were doing and thinking on 911.

Something must be done to counter this propaganda machine.

Bookmarked the site for alternative radio.

We do have some great people--Howard Zinn, Norm Chomsky, Bill Moyers. With all that goes on these days, it is good to remember them.

That's a hoot...IMO, the remains of the WTC, if they still existed, would be remains of a CRIME SCENE, possibly tainted with human debris, regardless of how microscopic.

AND no doubt the voiceover for that awful commercial (talk about commercializing a tragedy...Karl Rove must hold stock in that company!) was so....subdued, and reminded you of a funeral director's.

:puke:

it was. meaning the parting of your dear money. :)

notice they state it's gold CLAD...that means some cheap metal plated with a very thin coat of gold.

but, it's the damn thought of everyone trying to make money, or votes or fame from 9-11 that gets me.

I'd like to know how many they've sold!

The sheeple don't hear gold CLAD...they just hear GOLD.

Is this the ad that some months ago had to be pulled because it said the 'coins' are made from metal from the Twin Towers?

They came back with a slightly changed ad saying the metal comes from vaults underneath the Towers.

You can't keep a good con man down, eh?

true...elliot spitzer went after them for making those (false) statements...and that was observant of you to notice the new wording in the ad.
