Dolphin May Have 'Remains' of Legs, Possible Evidence Ocean Mammals Lived on Land

By HIROKO TABUCHI

Quote:
TOKYO Nov 6, 2006 (AP)— Japanese researchers said Sunday that a bottlenose dolphin captured last month has an extra set of fins that could be the remains of hind legs, a discovery that may provide further evidence that ocean-dwelling mammals once lived on land.

ossil remains show dolphins and whales were four-footed land animals about 50 million years ago and share the same common ancestor as hippos and deer. Scientists believe they later transitioned to an aquatic lifestyle and their hind limbs disappeared.

"I believe the fins may be remains from the time when dolphins' ancient ancestors lived on land … this is an unprecedented discovery," Seiji Osumi, an adviser at Tokyo's Institute of Cetacean Research, said at a news conference televised Sunday.

wait a sec.....i thought ocean dwelling animals migrated to land.....not vice versa.

maybe it's evidence that some ocean dwelling animals are beginning a new migration onto land again. maybe nature knows that mankind doesn't have much longer and that the land will once again be populated by ocean life to begin everything new again???????????

besides....i should move this to the "science" section....if i knew how. lol

The reason why I posted that was because my thought on the dolphin could be the same thing. (A partially attached not fully formed twin.) I've seen shows on it happening in humans. The weirest was of this guy in Napal (I think it was) that had two mouths on his head. The other mouth actually had teeth and could open and close. It was a bit repulsive, but interesting. Oh, if that girl had born in todays age, I'd be pretty sure that the extra limbs would have been removed and her club foot fixed as much as possible.
