CNN’s Jeff Greenfield has lost his mind

There are a lot of people in the media who have lost touch with the nation, but CNN's Jeff Greenfield has lost touch with human reality.

He's so far gone, it's an insult to out of touch people to call him merely "out of touch." The man has lost it, utterly and completely.

According to this CNN-endorsed lunatic, if you wear a jacket, a collared shirt and no tie, you are emulating the radical conservative ruler of Iran.

Oh gawd! So, it now begins. It didn't take long for the media to start their attack on Obama. Looks like we are in for two years of sillyness about Barak's choice of clothing.

Most people have examined Al Gore's and George W. Bush's competing Sunday appearances from the standpoint of substance: Did they have command of the issues? Were they presidential? Enough of that. Believing that we will never fully leave the age of Clinton, it's this columnist's opinion that style will count for 60 percent of the eventual nominee's final grade.

Given that, things don't look too good for the vice president. He appeared completely defensive throughout his hour with Tim Russert. Part of that was because Russert — always a tough interview — was positively manic this time. He looked like he was going to burst out of his chair and go straight for Gore's throat. In the face of this assault, Gore looked completely passive — and looked stranger than he should have. Then, it suddenly seemed obvious why this was the case: The suit. Al's suit.

It was not the traditional dark blue/black "power" suit we expect our big-time pols to wear. Instead, it was a brown-tan; it was earth tones. Uh-oh, I sense a Naomi Wolf sighting. Girlfriend must really be back in charge! Now, aside from the fact that Russert's suit was dark, Gore suffered in another way with this odd fashion selection.

He became almost invisible as he blended in with the background of his Naval Observatory study. The furniture was also various types of oak and teal. In a sense, it's not surprising for the avowed environmentalist to appear in an earth-friendly ambiance. But, combined with Gore's bronzed tan, it was often difficult to see where the man ended and the background began. Yes, this seems almost a trivial matter. But appearances do count.

This is especially true for an Al Gore who is trying to emerge from Bill Clinton's shadow. There's a good reason why these suits are called power suits. Earth tones might give a sense of relaxation in a casual setting. But the way the game is played in politics, a sit-down with Meet the Press — especially when you've got the whole hour — is not "casual." It's very much business; indeed, it's something of a war environment. Worse, the appearance ended up making Gore look the opposite of relaxed. A suit can only do so much.

George W., on the other hand, wore a more traditional dark blue suit in the Texas Governor's Mansion. Now, it's true that This Week is a lot easier on interviewees than Meet the Press. Russert is a tenacious bulldog and may be the most ruthlessly objective (his Democratic background aside) in the business. Sam Donaldson and Cokie Roberts are clear liberals, but generally they are milquetoasts when it comes to grilling a subject — regardless of the victim's affiliation. But, putting that caveat aside, it remains true that Bush just generally appeared calmer, low-key and in command; he seemed more presidential than Gore. Another way of saying this is that George W. Bush seemed comfortable in his own skin in a way that Al Gore did not.

These repubs are pathetic. Somehow this has to be removed from politics. This is just another example of how little these people regard debate and discussion to resolve issues. It is their job to ensure that America remains divided along political preferential lines. Which side is offering the best most believable lies, and who with division, threats and bribes can rule! Why not try bi-partisanship, information and truth!

I am more convinced now that Obama is a solid democratic choice for change, compromise and correction to the American political scene. Obama should be half of the ticket to the Whitehouse. I think the Repugs are afraid that He could be a better choice than the AIPAC influenced Lieberman.

If style is what makes a man or a woman, then the prez and the first lady are total failures. Bush always wears that same ugly light blue shirt...you all know the one. He rolls it up to his hairy elbows when he wants to look like he's working with the peons. Now and then he does change his tie, but not often. Bush is always wearing that same ugly smirk on his face. He always looks like he needs more sleep, but that's no surprise...he's prolly been up drinking all night. It's not worry putting those wrinkles in his face, and I doubt that it's the Texas sun, either.

Laura Bush is the frumpiest first lady that has been in the White House since Bess Truman. Barney looks better than both of them when all three of them appear in public.

I like the crack about Barney. I was just wondering if the twins know how much their father is despised by the public. Or, are they sheltered from these kinds of realities?

I don't know, Just...they're probably sheltered, although I don't see how they can be completely unaware as to how their father is the most hated man on the planet. Unless of course, they inherited their father's mental capabilities.

I fear that Jeff Greenfield is showing all the depth of a smurf-sized petri dish. What matters about a political candidate is not a fashion sense --- which can be shared with millions of others -- but that person's positions. These silly attacks show both desperation and cowardice.

As for the Bush girls, I hope that one day they will realize the damage that their father's administration has done to America, this country's reputation, and the world. Perhaps they will be moved to try to repair some of this damage -- which would be ironic and fitting.

True, will...but unfortunately, there are a vast number of Americans who put more emphasis on how someone dresses, or is perceived to dress according to how the media describe him or her, than on whether or not that person is qualified for the job he or she might be seeking.
