There's a legend in my part of the state of NC that Abe's real father was one Abram Enloe, a farmer within whose home Nancy Hanks worked as a hired girl. Abram got Nancy pregnant and, because his wife was in a high state of hysterics concerning the scandal, convinced Thomas Lincoln to take Nancy out of the state with him when he was on his way to Kentucky. There's a book written by a Mr. Cathey that tells all about it, and the Enloes of Macon County have photos of a few of their ancestors who resemble Abe a great deal. (Sorry, I can't remember the name of the book or the first name of the author without getting out some files that are in the basement. I don't want to do that at 3 am!)
To make the legend even more intriguing, Abram Enloe is buried all by himself in a historic cemetery in Murphy, NC. No family surrounds him, yet he was married with several children at the time the Nancy Hanks scandal was supposed to have occurred. It's long been speculated as to where the rest of his family are buried...no one seems to know.
