FIVE people have been charged with taking or helping funnel more than $US1 million ($1.3 million) in cash, sports cars and jewellery as bribes to rig bids on Iraqi reconstruction contracts.
The charges comes one day after US Congress heard the US Government could not account for up to $US12 billion ($15 billion) in cash – weighing 360 tonnes – it sent to Iraq in 2003 and 2004.
A federal grand jury in New Jersey has indicted five people, including two US Army Reserve officers, over a bribery scheme involving the theft of millions of dollars from an Iraqi reconstruction fund.
Officials said the agency in charge of reconstruction in Iraq lost more than $US3.6 million because of the contract bribery scheme, which lasted two years.
Two of the defendants allegedly used the money to buy a new deck and hot tub for their New Jersey home. >-More-->
