Soldiers Face Neglect, Frustration At Army's Top Medical Facility

By Dana Priest and Anne Hull
Washington Post Staff Writers
Sunday, February 18, 2007

Behind the door of Army Spec. Jeremy Duncan's room, part of the wall is torn and hangs in the air, weighted down with black mold. When the wounded combat engineer stands in his shower and looks up, he can see the bathtub on the floor above through a rotted hole. The entire building, constructed between the world wars, often smells like greasy carry-out. Signs of neglect are everywhere: mouse droppings, belly-up cockroaches, stained carpets, cheap mattresses.

This is the world of Building 18, not the kind of place where Duncan expected to recover when he was evacuated to Walter Reed Army Medical Center from Iraq last February with a broken neck and a shredded left ear, nearly dead from blood loss. But the old lodge, just outside the gates of the hospital and five miles up the road from the White House, has housed hundreds of maimed soldiers recuperating from injuries suffered in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

General's dismissal follows reports on poor treatment of wounded soldiers

BREAKING NEWS

Updated: 24 minutes ago
WASHINGTON - The Army said Thursday that the two-star general in charge of Walter Reed Army Medical Center has been relieved of command following disclosures about inadequate treatment of wounded soldiers.

Maj. Gen. George W. Weightman, who was commanding general of the North Atlantic Regional Medical Command as well as Walter Reed hospital, was relieved of command by Army Secretary Francis J. Harvey.

In a brief announcement, the Army said service leaders had “lost trust and confidence” in Weightman’s leadership abilities “to address needed solutions for soldier outpatient care” at Walter Reed.

What will Bush say to this man, maybe something like "You've done a heck of a job, Georgie" ?

I read the Sgt. was relieved of duty and repositioned-

Quote:
The soldiers said they were also told their first sergeant has been relieved of duty, and that all of their platoon sergeants have been moved to other positions at Walter Reed. And 120 permanent-duty soldiers are expected to arrive by mid-March to take control of the Medical Hold Unit, the soldiers said.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Army public affairs did not respond to a request sent Sunday evening to verify the personnel changes.

Yes. the Maj Gen will probably fail upward and the men get punished, probably by being sent to a hotspot to deal with the insurgents. Typical- Whistleblowers always get the blame, not their traitorous leaders who approve shit like Stalag- oh, no I mean Building 18!

Message is loud and clear.

Witnesses slam Army care at Walter Reed

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Witnesses told a House panel Monday that wounded U.S. soldiers are forced to struggle against a nightmarish and untrustworthy Army medical system which leaves veterans stranded in unfit conditions.

Two Iraq war veterans and the wife of a third gave heartbreaking, at times stunning, tales of neglect at the now notorious Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

"This is how we treat our soldiers -- we give them nothing," said Annette McLeod, wife of Cpl. Wendell McLeod, who received an injury to his head in the war. "They're good enough to go and sacrifice their life, and we give them nothing. You need to fix the system."

The panel was convened in the wake of a scandal triggered by The Washington Post's detailing of problems at the hospital.

Rep. John Tierney, chairman of the House Subcommittee on National Security and Foreign Affairs, called "the unsanitary conditions" and other problems at Walter Reed hospital "appalling."

[/url]

The scandal over treatment of outpatients at Walter Reed Army Medical Center has focused attention on the Army's decision to privatize the facilities support workforce at the hospital, a move commanders say left the building maintenance staff undermanned.

Some Democratic lawmakers have questioned the decision to hire IAP Worldwide Services, a contractor with connections to the Bush administration and to KBR, a Halliburton subsidiary.

After all of this has been made public, how can anyone still believe that the Bush administration is "supporting the troops," and that Dick Cheney and Halliburton aren't getting richer by the minute on the blood of our soldiers?

Army Surgeon General Kevin C. Kiley has resigned, the third military official to lose his job in the wake of the Walter Reed scandal. An anonymous defense official says Kiley was asked to step down by the acting Army Secretary, who only got his job two weeks ago following another abrupt dismissal.

Linda Bilmes, the Harvard finance expert who helped establish the true cost of the war, including veteran healthcare, turns her attention to the Walter Reed scandal, and the bureaucratic quagmire that keeps our soldiers from getting help. Bilmes offers four lessons to avoid future problems. We can only hope someone takes her advice.
