Excellent post, DO.g's....and I agree with dori. Violence and terrorism done in the name of any religion should be denounced. Yet, the history of the Christian religion is full of both....consider the Beatitudes (a word that is never mentioned in the Bible. Also absent from the Bible are the words "Sermon on the Mount," which Christians use to describe what Jesus says in the fifth chapter of Matthew, all beginning with "Blessed are.....")
For example, here is what Dan Barker of the Freedom From Religion Foundation says about the fifth beatitude, "Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy:"
Quote:
"This is admirable, but how many of us are ever in a position to bestow mercy? The ability to grant mercy implies an authoritative rule over others: slavery, kingship, military. Christian parents ought to observe this mandate when they're about to follow the biblical command to spank their children. ....A better moral principal might say, "Blessed are the merciful, because no human being has the right to harm another."
"There is also a potential dark side to this verse," continues Dan Barker.
Quote:
Many believers are eager to forgive the sins of their pastors, priests, and other church leaders, unwilling to denounce them or to seek criminal or civil justice when they commit crimes. This is painfully evident in the many cases of pedophilia and child abuse in the ministry. Blaming or ignoring the victims, many church members rally to the support of the minister, consoling him with "mercy" in his time of need. If this beatitude produces such a lack of accountability, then it is truly an evil verse.
